Empowering Parents: Legal Education Seminar on SNS Issues for Children

On January 20, 2026, a significant legal education seminar took place at Miyahara Middle School in Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture, organized by Adire Law Office. Led by attorney Kenichi Nagai from the Osaka Bar Association, the seminar was part of the 'Protecting Children Through Legal Education Project'. Approximately 200 parents and their children, poised to enter middle school, gathered to enhance their understanding of legal issues related to social media and smartphones.

The title of the seminar was 'What Should We Do? Let's Think Together About SNS Troubles'. It introduced parents and students to real-life examples of issues arising from social media, highlighting the importance of recognizing their potential for trouble. The key takeaways for participants centered around understanding what actions could lead to being categorized as 'illegal' and how to identify risky behaviors. Importantly, strategies for seeking help in challenging situations were also discussed.

The session consisted of a 40-minute lecture followed by a 10-minute Q&A, conducted in the gymnasium of the school. Attorney Nagai articulated the risks associated with the anonymous nature of social networking services and the rapid dissemination of messages, underscoring the need for both children and parents to be well-versed in how to navigate these challenges successfully.

Feedback from Participants

The principal of Miyahara Middle School expressed gratitude for the seminar's execution, emphasizing the need for parents to understand their responsibility in guiding their children’s use of smartphones and social media effectively.

Parents who attended the seminar commented on the relevance and practical application of the discussed cases. Many felt it served as an excellent opportunity to have meaningful discussions with their children about their online interactions, fostering awareness of the potential dangers.

Objectives of the 'Legal Education Project'

Attorney Nagai shared his impressions after the seminar, noting how the audience engaged with the material, nodding in understanding, which affirmed the message was received. He expressed a vision for the project aimed at informing children not only about avoiding becoming victims but also about not becoming perpetrators in the digital world.

He conveyed the aspiration to hold more sessions to empower children, ensuring they know they can find solutions when faced with problems. Understanding the law is a critical first step towards fostering a sense of safety and agency in navigating the challenges of the digital age.

The 'Protecting Children Through Legal Education Project' aims to eliminate situations where children find themselves in trouble without the resources to seek help or guidance. Understanding legal boundaries is pivotal for both children and adults, encouraging a society where knowledge empowers action. The goal is to create a community where children can face online threats confidently, knowing when to seek assistance and how to act appropriately.
