JDS Launches Special Site for World Down Syndrome Day 2026
The Japan Down Syndrome Association (JDS), based in Toshima, Tokyo, has officially opened a dedicated site in anticipation of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, 2026. This initiative centers around the theme for 2026: "Together Against Loneliness" (ひとりじゃないよ). Through this site, JDS will distribute awareness posters free of charge, share information about events and light-up activities across Japan, and promote various campaigns to connect people with Down syndrome and their families with society.
About World Down Syndrome Day
March 21 is recognized as World Down Syndrome Day, established by the United Nations. This date was selected because people with Down syndrome have three copies of the 21st chromosome. Each year, the International Down Syndrome Coalition (DSi) sets a theme for awareness activities. In 2026, this theme emphasizes the importance of community and connection, portraying the message that no one should feel alone, especially individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
Main Features of the Special Site
1.
Free Awareness Poster Distribution
Since 2013, JDS has been producing awareness posters every year to educate the public about the lives of those with Down syndrome. These posters are meant to be displayed in schools, hospitals, public facilities, and businesses. The model for the 2026 poster is Masahiro Matsuda, a 39-year-old from Okayama, who expressed his desire to be a host during a conference. This assertive stance is captured alongside the theme "ひとりじゃないよ" in the poster. Free distribution registration and PDF downloads are available on the special site.
2.
Information on Events and Light-Ups Nationwide
JDS will share details about various events and activities organized by regional chapters and parent groups across Japan to promote understanding of Down syndrome, including blue and yellow light-up events at notable landmarks on March 21.
3.
Charity Campaign: JAMMIN × JDS
In collaboration with the Kyoto-based charity fashion brand JAMMIN, JDS will offer original designed items for a week of charity sales. This year’s theme is about fruits, representing fresh and enjoyable seasonal living. The design features a visual concept of having three of the 21st chromosome depicted, symbolizing the message behind Down syndrome. For every item purchased, a portion of the proceeds will support JDS’s awareness activities.
