POWERCHINA Strengthens ESG Commitment in Serbia Through Sustainable Infrastructure Projects
In the wake of the recently concluded COP30 conference, which set higher global standards for climate action, Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) is reaffirming its dedication to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles in Serbia. The nation serves as POWERCHINA's regional headquarters for Eurasia (RHQ) and has been an essential part of the company's commitment to sustainable development.
During a recent statement, Yang Bo, the Chief Representative of POWERCHINA in Serbia, emphasized the tangible impact that effective ESG practices can have on critical growth areas. He stated, “Now more than ever, the world needs infrastructure that is sustainable, efficient, and inclusive. We will continue to invest in initiatives that support sustainable development, benefiting communities and moving the world towards a friendlier future.”
POWERCHINA oversees operations in 63 countries and regions through its Eurasia RHQ, and around 85% of its regional workforce consists of local experts. The company has significantly contributed to Serbia's local economy by creating over 1,500 jobs through various projects since entering the Serbian market in 2012.
One of the company's most notable projects is the construction of the Belgrade Bypass, section B. As the primary contractor, POWERCHINA has also modernized drainage and water supply systems in residential areas near the road, speeding up the construction process while enhancing the quality of life for local residents. In addition, POWERCHINA is connecting communities by signing contracts for the construction of Line 1 of the Belgrade Metro, a vital long-term transport infrastructure project. Begun in 2019, this collaboration marks an important advancement in reducing long-standing congestion and pollution in Belgrade, a city with a population of 1.7 million.
Furthermore, POWERCHINA facilitated the construction of the Gornji Milanovac Bypass, which was officially opened in October 2024 to provide a dedicated route for commercial transport.
Emphasizing social and cultural engagement, which lies at the core of its mission, POWERCHINA began constructing the national stadium of Serbia on May 1, 2024. This modern facility aims to bolster Serbia's vibrant sports scene for both fans and athletes. Additionally, POWERCHINA supports youth initiatives in Serbia, such as the “China-Serbia Youth Dialogue,” fostering opportunities for young people in both countries while strengthening bilateral relationships.
POWERCHINA’s infrastructure projects also play a critical cultural role. For its contributions to the Gornji Milanovac Bypass project, the company was awarded the Gold Medal of the Rising Sun in Takovo, a prestigious accolade from the municipality recognizing exceptional contributions to the local community.
Environmental protection remains a key focus for POWERCHINA’s strategy in Eurasia. In 2024, the company used more than 900,000 tons of low-carbon concrete in projects within the region. On a global scale, POWERCHINA contributes to the goals of reaching peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
Moreover, POWERCHINA is expanding its global renewable energy portfolio and climate-resilient infrastructure. Recently, the company signed a general contractor agreement with Spanish company Viroque Energy for the Arreaz photovoltaic power plant in Cádiz. This 44 MW project is expected to supply 95,000 MWh of clean electricity each year.
In all its endeavors, POWERCHINA adheres to its business philosophy of “Integrity, Commitment, Cooperation for Mutual Benefit.” The company is dedicated to executing socially significant projects in alignment with the UN’s sustainable development goals.
