Cultural Exchange Event: Tokyo Meets Monaco
On August 12, 2025, the Yumeiku Foundation hosted an international cultural exchange event in Asakusa titled "Tokyo Meets Monaco: Learning and Fun Walk." The event welcomed a French university student from Monaco to join nine Japanese middle and high school participants and one parent.
The day kicked off with an engaging quiz and games that introduced Monaco and French culture. Participants who initially showed little interest in international topics began to ask questions, signifying a transformative experience. One standout moment was watching a performance by Aya Nakamura, who was chosen as a symbol for the Paris Olympics. Children learned about Nakamura’s background and music career, which fostered discussions about her significance in contemporary culture.
The group participated in singing French songs, including a group rendition of "Champs-Élysées" in French. They also enjoyed a version of the popular Japanese game, Werewolf, with unique roles that sparked excitement. Newcomers expressed that they found the atmosphere friendly and welcoming, which further encouraged their participation.
Discovering Japanese Culture in Asakusa
As the day progressed, participants transitioned to exploring the rich cultural heritage of Asakusa. A visit to Senso-ji Temple included traditional activities such as drawing omikuji (fortune slips) and sampling local delicacies like strawberry candy and ningyo-yaki (a type of cake). Enthusiastic responses from students highlighted the joy of experiencing Japanese traditions together with their counterparts from Monaco, marking their first visit to the area.
Dinner was a delightful experience, featuring monjayaki, a local specialty. Anai, the Monaco student, expressed initial hesitation about the dish's texture but was pleasantly surprised upon tasting it. The other participants were equally curious about how to prepare Asakusa-style monjayaki, leading to lively discussions.
Celebrating Summer with Fireworks
The event culminated with a hand-held fireworks display, creating a memorable summer experience. Participants cheered as colorful fireworks lit up the night sky, with many exclaiming, "This is the first time I've done fireworks this year!" The finale involved a friendly competition to see who could keep their sparkler lit the longest, culminating in shared laughter and a reflective moment as they embraced the summer ambiance.
Anai shared, "It was enjoyable to spend time with everyone from start to finish. It was a great stimulus for me." Participants from the event echoed similar sentiments, noting how well-organized the activities were and how they created meaningful summer memories, from cooking to enjoying fireworks together.
Organizer's Insights
The organizers recognized that opportunities to interact with individuals from different backgrounds are rare for young people. They believe that transcending cultural and language barriers through laughter and learning can significantly broaden children's perspectives. The event also featured the first-ever participation of a parent and child duo, who reflected on how building new connections enhances their understanding and experiences.
Plans are underway for future events that will also allow parents and children to participate together, aiming to create moments that inspire curiosity and interest in the unknown.
