Davenport Aviation's Successful Virtus System Test
Davenport Aviation has marked a significant milestone in military aerospace technology by successfully completing the first test of its state-of-the-art "Virtus" system, aptly named "First Shot." Conducted in western Texas, this test represents a critical advancement for the modular weapon system tailored for the AS350/H125 helicopter platform.
The successful test campaign involved the firing of several rockets, validating the Virtus system as a proven weapon configuration for the AS350/H125. This achievement confirms the system’s structural integrity, operational capability, and seamless integration within the aircraft platform. Davenport Aviation is now positioned to present a fully functional combat-ready configuration that supports modern military and security operations.
According to Rob McMillin, the Deputy Director for Aircraft and Aerospace Systems at Davenport Aviation, "This is a pivotal moment for both Davenport Aviation and the Virtus team. Completing our first test campaign not only affirms our technological advancements but also demonstrates that the H125 can safely and effectively operate in a weaponized configuration."
The Virtus system is notable for being the first modular weapon system globally developed specifically for the AS350/H125 series. It allows operators to rapidly configure a single aircraft for various mission profiles, making installation and disassembly feasible in under an hour. This adaptability is crucial for military operations that require swift transitions between different roles.
Designed for versatility across multiple missions, the Virtus system supports a variety of armaments ranging from containerized miniguns and unguided rockets to precision-guided missiles and in-flight weapons. Additionally, it incorporates EO/IR sensors (both visible light and thermal cameras), door-mounted weapon options, hoists, searchlights, cargo capacity, ballistic protection, and emergency floats. This diversity enables operations ranging from armed reconnaissance and intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) to special operations, search and rescue, firefighting, humanitarian aid, and CASEVAC/MEDEVAC missions.
Chris Arnold, the Director of Government Sales at Davenport Aviation, emphasized the significance of the successful test, stating, "The achievement of the First Shot not only confirms our mission to create a truly multi-role aircraft but also provides operators with flexibility without the costs and complexities associated with traditional attack platforms. The Virtus system allows global operators to meet evolving mission requirements using a single, cost-effective helicopter."
Davenport Aviation extends its gratitude to partners XP Services, Moog Inc., and Ember Solutions for their contributions in reaching this vital milestone. The Virtus system builds upon the established AS350/H125 platform, offering operators a chance to upgrade their existing fleets while reducing procurement, training, and lifecycle costs.
