BASF Launches Global Registration for Innovative Herbicide Replexor™ Active to Enhance Crop Management

BASF's New Herbicide: Replexor™ Active

BASF Agricultural Solutions marks a significant milestone in agricultural chemistry with the commencement of the global registration process for Replexor™ Active—an innovative herbicide active ingredient featuring broad-spectrum efficacy against both broadleaf weeds and grasses. This exciting development is poised to transform weed management strategies for farmers worldwide.

What is Replexor™ Active?

Replexor Active (fendioxypyracil) is part of BASF's well-regarded protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) innovation pipeline. It aims to enhance weed control programs on over 50 million hectares globally upon peak adoption. The initial regulatory dossiers are being filed in Brazil and Australia in July 2026, with further submissions planned for the United States and Argentina in 2027. If approvals proceed as expected, BASF targets to introduce Replexor Active to the market around 2030.

Farmers have long faced challenges from herbicide-resistant weeds, especially in critical crops like soybean, corn, and cotton. The reduction in available effective active ingredients due to regulatory constraints has made weed control increasingly complicated. As a solution, PPO herbicides have remained a cornerstone of resistance management for over five decades. Replexor Active aims to fill a significant gap by complementing BASF's existing line of PPO herbicides, which includes Kixor® Active and Tirexor® Active. While other PPO herbicides primarily target broadleaf weeds, Replexor Active expands this to cover key annual grasses such as Eleusine indica, Echinochloa spp., and Setaria spp—a critical addition in managing resistant grass weeds where PPO resistance remains minimal.

Industry Insights

Maximilian Becker, a board member at BASF Agricultural Solutions, emphasized that Replexor Active addresses a pressing gap in the current market: "For growers, there have been very few new tools for combating resistant grasses lately. Replexor Active steps in to directly tackle this issue, articulately fitting into existing resistance management strategies that farmers are developing using our PPO portfolio."

This novel herbicide not only possesses broad-spectrum activity but also offers several benefits such as rapid weed control and compatibility with no-till farming practices, which play a vital role in preserving soil structure and minimizing erosion. Furthermore, Replexor Active demonstrates effectiveness at relatively low application rates, simplifying usability and reducing the volume of active ingredient required per hectare.

Melanie Bausen-Wiens, another management board member, remarked, "The initiation of Replexor Active's registration signifies our strong innovation pipeline. It underscores our leadership in crop protection, showcasing our commitment to translating sustained research and development investments into valuable products that address real challenges faced by farmers. With the PPO herbicide-tolerant traits we are developing, they will soon enjoy greater flexibility in the application of Replexor Active."
