AUCC's Premier Program Accelerates HBCU Student Development in Public Service

Empowering Future Leaders: AUCC's Inaugural Program in Public and Government Service

The Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC) has made significant strides in nurturing the next generation of leaders through its Center for Excellence in Public and Government Service (CFE). Preparing to welcome its third cohort of students for 2026, this groundbreaking initiative focuses on enhancing the leadership capabilities of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) students.

Initiated with a substantial $2 million grant secured by Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) in 2023, the program aims to equip students with necessary skills and experiences for a variety of careers in public service. The CFE stands out as the first of its kind targeted specifically at HBCU students, reflecting a commitment to fostering diversity in government and public sectors.

A Unique Learning Experience

For the second consecutive summer, the program has offered a comprehensive, eight-week training session that provides a unique blend of professional development and hands-on experience. This year, participants had the opportunity to immerse themselves in American political systems during a week in Washington, D.C., where they interacted with nearly two dozen federal agencies. This experiential learning environment allows students to connect theory with practice and gain invaluable insights into federal operations.

Dr. Anika A. Evans, the program manager for CFE, expressed her awe at the scholars’ commitment and enthusiasm. She remarked, “This summer has been nothing short of transformative, informative, and exhilarating. Witnessing the dedication and passion of the A.T.I. Scholars has been truly heart-warming. These remarkable young leaders are not only committed to public service but also embody a higher standard of service and leadership.”

Curriculum Highlights

The rigorous curriculum of the AUCC program covers an extensive range of topics such as:
  • - Federal Resume Building: A critical skill for students to learn as they prepare for internships and careers within government.
  • - Understanding Political Systems: Educational sessions are designed to help students navigate the complexities of American political frameworks.
  • - Podcast Development: Students engage in extending their learning beyond the program by creating podcasts discussing relevant political issues from a student’s perspective.

One of the key objectives is to ensure that students leave the program not just with theoretical knowledge, but also with practical skills and insights that can be applied in real-world situations. This year’s cohort included students from various HBCUs across the nation and the Virgin Islands, emphasizing the program's commitment to inclusivity.

Future Opportunities

With applications reopening on November 3, 2025, for the upcoming A.T.I. Leadership Cohort, AUCC is eager to continue its mission of empowering HBCU students towards impactful careers in public service. Interested students and federal agencies wishing to learn more about partnership opportunities can get involved through the CFE’s contact channels or follow their updates on LinkedIn.

The investment in these young scholars today promises a more inclusive and effective government tomorrow.
