From Bystanders to Heart Savers: MedStar Health's Impactful CPR Training Event
In a profound initiative to increase life-saving skills within the community, MedStar Health held its third annual CPR and AED training event at Montgomery Blair High School during CPR & AED Awareness Week. Bringing together nearly a hundred attendees, this engaging program aimed to empower participants with essential skills to step in during emergencies.
MedStar Health, in collaboration with notable partners such as Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service (MCFRS) and the American Heart Association, provided free training sessions led by CPR-certified instructors. Attendees learned critical bystander CPR techniques and how to use automated external defibrillators (AEDs), essential tools that can save lives in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
According to a recent survey conducted by MedStar Health, only 52% of adults expressed confidence in their ability to perform CPR. Alarmingly, more than 75% of participants were unaware that chest compressions alone are a highly effective means of performing CPR. This training event sought to bridge that knowledge gap and prepare community members to act decisively in life-threatening situations.
“CPR is incredibly effective when administered quickly and accurately,” noted Dr. Minhal Makshood, a cardiologist at MedStar Health. “Trainings like these are crucial for improving survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest. The individual whose life you save may very well be a loved one.”
Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with physicians, nurses, first responders, and athletic trainers who provided hands-on practice and guidance. Lt. Irvin Smith, a community action coordinator for MCFRS, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “We aim to equip as many Montgomery County residents as possible with the confidence to assist their friends and neighbors. Programs like 'Take 10 Montgomery' illustrate how just ten minutes can arm individuals with skills to potentially save lives.”
The event culminated in the presentation of five Heartsaver Hero Awards, bestowed by the American Heart Association. These honored individuals had recently performed CPR on friends or even strangers, showcasing the impact of immediate action.
Award recipients included:
- - Megan Leatherwood
- - David Clingerman
- - Travis McCormack
- - Agbegnigan Amouzou
- - Richard Hoye
“These Heart Savers are genuine heroes,” stated Lucía Zegarra, community impact director with the American Heart Association. “Their readiness to help demonstrates the necessity of preparation in emergencies and the importance of having robust Cardiac Emergency Response Plans in place.”
Significantly, Christine Clingerman shared her heartfelt story about her husband, Dave, who saved her life after she unexpectedly went into cardiac arrest. With no prior knowledge of CPR, Dave was guided through the necessary steps by emergency dispatchers. “Thankfully, those trained were able to support him in performing CPR, which ultimately saved my life,” Christine recounted. “Now, we want everyone to understand how vital it is to know CPR and the difference it can make in an emergency.”
