Canon's Strategic Launch of Remanufacturing in the US
Canon is embarking on a significant global initiative aimed at enhancing its remanufacturing business for multifunction printers. This strategic move, set to kick off in April 2026, will see Canon Virginia begin the production of remanufactured multifunction printers, marking a robust commencement of remanufacturing operations within the United States.
At the heart of Canon's remanufacturing project is the innovative technology designed to restore used multifunction printers to a like-new condition. Currently, remanufactured printers are produced at Canon's facilities in Ibaraki, Japan, and in Germany, serving the Japanese and European markets. By expanding this established production process and remanufacturing technology to Canon Virginia in the USA, the company aims to significantly increase its remanufacturing output.
Canon's multifunction printers are developed based on a platform-based design philosophy, which standardizes the core structure of the devices across different product classes. This unification extends to components and units, as well as disassembly and assembly processes. This approach allows the use of common parts and units within the same class of products, ensuring that assembly procedures, production lines, and quality standards are maintained consistently, thus facilitating efficient production while upholding high quality.
Moreover, in the remanufacturing process, Canon utilizes operational data related to the years of use, parts replacement history, and print volume of the collected multifunction printers to assess which components can be reused. This systematic approach allows Canon to create a list of parts requiring replacement while maximizing the reuse of viable components, resulting in efficient remanufacturing operations.
With the establishment of a globally standard production methodology, Canon is confident that newly operational sites and production lines will be capable of maintaining an impressive parts reuse rate of over 90% per device. This commitment to environmental performance, coupled with the delivery of high-quality and high-performance remanufactured devices at competitive prices, is a core business objective.
In conjunction with this production methodology, Canon Virginia is collaborating with Canon USA to set up a robust collection network for multifunction printers within the United States. This strategic initiative aims to reliably supply the expected demand for remanufactured multifunction printers, reinforcing Canon's position in the US market.
Looking ahead, Canon is dedicated to developing a framework for resource circulation within consumer regions, continuously expanding its remanufacturing endeavors. Through these sustainable practices, Canon aims to contribute to the formation of a circular economy, underlining its commitment to environmental stewardship in the technology sector. As Canon enhances its presence in the remanufacturing market, the company underscores the importance of sustainable manufacturing practices in the face of constant globalization and growing environmental concerns.
