Novelis' Green Commitment: Innovations in Renewable Energy and Recycling

This Earth Day serves as a vital reminder of our shared duty to protect the planet. At Novelis, a global leader in aluminum recycling, we embrace this responsibility wholeheartedly. In line with this year's Earth Day theme, "Our Power, Our Planet," we reiterate our dedication to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. Over recent years, our efforts to transition towards renewable energy sources have strengthened our commitment to a cleaner future.

Sustainable Energy Projects



We have implemented prominent energy projects that align with our sustainability goals and significantly reduce our operational carbon footprint. Notably, we have taken innovative approaches to integrate renewable energy into our operations. For example, in Brazil, we have introduced photovoltaic modules on the rooftops of our used beverage can collection centers. This initiative not only curtails energy consumption but also promotes clean, renewable energy for our facilities, enhancing our recycling supply chain while minimizing emissions.

In a powerful commitment, Novelis signed a ten-year Green Power Purchase Agreement with Statkraft to ensure our entire German production facilities, including rolling and recycling plants, operate on renewable energy sources by early 2024. By sourcing electricity solely from wind and solar, we anticipate a reduction of over 17,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually, emphasizing our commitment to clean energy solutions.

As part of our sustainable initiatives, our facility in Italy has become home to Novelis' inaugural onsite solar park, designed to minimize our carbon footprint. This $2.4 million investment spans 28,000 square meters, generating around 12% of the facility's energy needs and allowing us to channel surplus energy back into the Italian national grid.

Innovative Advancements in Recycling



Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond renewable energy. Recently, we have embarked on testing the use of hydrogen in our aluminum recycling furnaces at our facility in the UK. This innovative step is significant; hydrogen combustion produces no CO₂ emissions. Successfully implementing this technology could mark a breakthrough in reducing reliance on fossil fuels within the aluminum sector.

The Importance of Recycling



While our transition to clean energy is commendable, recycling aluminum remains a crucial strategy for emission reduction. Producing aluminum from recycled materials uses approximately 95% less energy compared to creating new aluminum, resulting in 95% fewer carbon emissions. At Novelis, we aim to achieve a minimum of 75% recycled content in our products by 2030. This endeavor, part of our vision dubbed "3x30," underscores our commitment to circular solutions for aluminum.

By enhancing our recycling capacity, developing collection networks, and collaborating with customers, we can reclaim aluminum scraps to continue this effective circle of use. Recycling aluminum reinforces our commitment to sustainability while reducing demand for energy-intensive primary aluminum production.
