Transforming Waste into Gardens: The OC Waste Recycling Initiative
On Saturday, October 3, from 7:30 a.m. to noon (or until supplies last), OC Waste & Recycling (OCWR) will hold a Community Compost Giveaway for residents of Orange County. This event allows community members to collect free, ready-to-use compost made from green waste that has been recycled from households across the county. This initiative exemplifies how recycling can impact local communities positively by closing the loop on waste.
Tom Koutroulis, the Director of OC Waste & Recycling, emphasized the significance of this event, stating, "This giveaway brings recycling full circle. Green waste collected from Orange County homes is turned into compost and returned to residents for their yards and gardens." This process ensures that organic materials do not end up in the landfill, but instead rejuvenate local soils, enhancing their nutrient content.
Where to Get Your Free Compost
Residents can pick up compost at three designated locations:
- - Bee Canyon Greenery (Frank R. Bowerman Landfill)
- - Valencia Greenery (Olinda Alpha Landfill)
- - Capistrano Greenery (Prima Deshecha Landfill)
At the Irvine and San Juan Capistrano sites, attendees are encouraged to bring along their own containers or heavy-duty yard waste bags, as well as shovels for loading the compost. Conversely, the Brea location will distribute pre-filled bags, limiting each household to four bags while supplies last.

OCWR's compost is certified by the U.S. Composting Council with the Seal of Testing Assurance, verifying that it meets rigorous safety and quality standards. It is also approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) and is compliant with the USDA National Organic Program. Additionally, it is recognized as Organic Input Materials (OIM) by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA).
Composting serves a dual purpose: returning essential nutrients to the soil and minimizing the waste sent to landfills while allowing for the preservation of landfill space necessary for long-term waste management.

Furthermore, residents are encouraged to dispose of hazardous household materials, such as batteries, paint, and cleaners, responsibly at designated Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers located in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine, and San Juan Capistrano. These centers operate from Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
