Engaging Middle School Students Through Literature
On November 2, 2025, the city of Hino will host a special event aimed at revitalizing interest in reading among middle school students. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the "Middle School and Author Exchange Program," organized by the Hino City Library. The highlight of the event will be a presentation by Kengo, a renowned creator known for introducing novels to young audiences.
Kengo has gained immense popularity on social media networks, sharing recommendations that resonate well with teenagers. His books are frequently chosen by young readers who may not have previously engaged with literature. The initiative is designed not just to make reading enjoyable, but to create an interactive space where students can connect with authors in a meaningful way.
This year, the event will take place from 14:00 to 15:40 at the Tamadaira-no-Mori Community Center. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 13:30, giving them time to settle in before the presentations begin. The day will be structured into two primary sections.
Event Details
First Part: Kengo’s Lecture
In the first segment, Kengo will share insights into the art of storytelling, discussing the magic of books and how they can transform readers' lives. His engaging approach aims to inspire students to explore literature further, encouraging them to find joy in reading.
Second Part: Student-Led Activities
Following Kengo’s presentation, there will be a fun interactive segment led entirely by middle school students. These young leaders will introduce their favorite books, presenting personal recommendations and insights to their peers. The segment will also feature a quiz corner, where students can test their knowledge and possibly win fun prizes!
This structure not only enhances the learning experience but empowers students to take an active role in promoting the joy of reading among their friends.
How to Participate
The event is open to all middle school students, regardless of whether they reside in Hino City. Those interested in attending can register by visiting their local library or using the application form available on the library's website. As space is limited to 30 attendees, early registration is recommended, with applications accepted until October 31, 2025, at 17:00.
The Hino City Library is making an effort to adapt to the needs of the community by also planning to livestream parts of the event for those unable to attend in person. Details will be provided on their official website leading up to the event.
By fostering a love for literature through engaging interactions between middle school students and authors like Kengo, this initiative hopes to catalyze a renaissance of reading among the youth, turning what is often seen as a solitary pastime into a shared joy.
