PIS and Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Team Up to Enhance Seafarers' Safety

PIS Signs Cooperation Pact with Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has recently cemented its dedication to protecting its seafarers by entering a strategic cooperation agreement with Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). Signed on September 15, 2025, the pact aims to enhance emergency response and protection services for PIS personnel operating overseas, ensuring security in an increasingly unstable geopolitical climate.

Details of the Agreement

The formal agreement was signed by PIS CEO Surya Tri Harto and Judha Nugraha, the Director for Indonesian Citizen Protection at MoFA, and was witnessed by Deputy Foreign Minister Arief Havas Oegroseno. This collaboration is set to improve coordination, preparedness, and data-sharing between PIS and the government, thereby improving responses to emergencies involving overseas staff.

Oegroseno emphasized that the collaboration extends beyond just crisis responses. The streamlined data exchange between the Ministry and PIS is expected to facilitate better-informed decision-making during emergencies. The Deputy Foreign Minister stated, “This agreement will allow us to jointly determine the right steps in addressing emergency situations.”

PIS’s Role in Global Energy Distribution

PIS is a significant player in global energy distribution, operating with 106 vessels across 65 international routes and employing more than 6,000 officers, many of whom are stationed in various countries. The commitment to safety for these seafarers is paramount, particularly in today's volatile geopolitical climate where risks can change rapidly.

CEO Surya stated, “This effective step ensures our seafarers feel protected, especially against the backdrop of rapid geopolitical changes.” PIS has established branch offices in Singapore, Dubai, and London, indicating its international footprint. Surya added that both the state and the company share a commitment to the safety of Indonesian citizens abroad, on both land and at sea.

Aligning with Global Goals

PIS's commitment to enhancing protection for its overseas workforce aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By providing stronger protection for its staff working abroad, PIS aims to create a safer and more resilient working environment, which in turn enhances its global competitiveness.

In addition to enhancing worker protection, PIS is also targeting business expansion in the non-captive market, having achieved 4% growth in 2021 and projecting a remarkable 19% growth by 2024.

Looking Ahead

As PIS continues to diversify its operations, this agreement with Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs marks a pivotal step in not only securing the safety of its seafarers but also fortifying the country’s presence in international waters. The collaboration signifies a commitment from both parties to act in unison to ensure that Indonesia's personnel abroad are effectively safeguarded and can operate with confidence in their roles.
