UA-Pulaski Technical College Launches Online Energy Management Program
A Step Toward Bridging Workforce Gaps
On March 4, 2025, the University of Arkansas Pulaski Technical College (UA-PTC) announced an exciting initiative aimed at addressing workforce shortages in the energy sector. With significant advancements in technology and energy management, Arkansas faces a critical need for a well-trained workforce ready to tackle the challenges arising from this dynamic field. This new program, developed in partnership with iDesign, comes at a pivotal time when industries in Arkansas are evolving, necessitating a workforce equipped with the right skills.
Meeting the Demand of a Growing Economy
Dr. Summer DeProw, Chancellor of UA-PTC, highlighted the urgency of this initiative: "Arkansas is at a pivotal moment. As industries evolve and grow, we must ensure our workforce is prepared to meet the demands of tomorrow." The intention of this partnership is to equip Arkansans with valuable skills and credentials that will enable them to excel in advanced energy domains, thus driving economic growth in the state.
Recognizing the need for sophisticated skills in technology and energy, the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board has set ambitious goals to raise the number of residents with postsecondary qualifications to 55% by 2030. However, with the rise of artificial intelligence and related technologies, a substantial skills gap remains in key technology and energy sectors.
The Evolving Curriculum
In response to these challenges, UA-PTC’s new online program will offer a range of training options, including online courses, industry certifications, and continuing education tailored to fill the needs of employers in the energy and technology sectors. Key collaborations with significant employers such as Arkansas Electric Cooperatives, Entergy, Southwest Power Pool, and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) ensure that the curriculum reflects the real-world demands of modern energy grid jobs.
The program will provide instruction in crucial areas such as energy systems, grid management, and cybersecurity. Its curriculum aligns with the standards set by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and incorporates Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) protocols, enabling students to develop skills vital for navigating the complexities of the current energy landscape.
Innovative Online Learning Platform
To develop this cutting-edge online program, UA-PTC has collaborated with iDesign, a Texas-based course developer known for designing and supporting high-quality online education. Utilizing iDesign’s innovative Align platform, which employs AI to enhance curriculum development and skills mapping, the program will facilitate a seamless learning experience for students.
Flexibility is a cornerstone of this initiative. By offering hybrid and online course options, the program caters to working adults and non-traditional students, significantly broadening participation across Arkansas.
Bridging Talent Gaps
Whitney Kilgore, co-founder and Chief Academic Officer of iDesign, stated, "Arkansas is setting a bold example for how state leaders and colleges can develop curriculum and programming that is responsive to the needs of this fast-changing, technology-driven labor market." This initiative not only addresses immediate workforce shortages but also empowers Arkansans to succeed in high-demand positions that are crucial for the economic vitality of the state.
UA-PTC currently serves over 6,000 students per year and stands as a key player in Arkansas's educational landscape and workforce development. Underlining its commitment to support adult learners, the college was awarded a workforce grant of $2 million through the HIRED program, further enhancing its educational offerings in this critical area.
