Novelis Honored by World Economic Forum for Sustainable Excellence
Novelis Recognized as a Leader in Sustainable Manufacturing by the WEF
Novelis, recognized as the largest global aluminum recycler, has made significant strides in creating a sustainable future for the aluminum industry. Recently, the World Economic Forum (WEF) acknowledged the Uhrichsville plant in Ohio as a Sustainability Lighthouse within its Global Lighthouse Network (GLN). This distinction marks a significant milestone as Novelis is the first aluminum manufacturer based in the United States to receive such an honor, solidifying its reputation as a leader among transformational industry players.
With a workforce of 400, the Uhrichsville facility has achieved an impressive 97% recycled content in its 3105 alloy, primarily utilized in the Building and Construction markets. This remarkable achievement diminishes the necessity for energy-intensive primary aluminum production, showcasing Novelis' dedication to innovation and sustainability.
The plant employs advanced recycling and processing techniques, including scrap segregation and cutting-edge melting, casting, and rolling technologies. These efforts, complemented by strategic procurement initiatives and IT solutions, have positioned the Uhrichsville facility as a GreenCircle Certified site, indicating third-party validation of its environmental claims.
The urgency for companies to mitigate climate change and reduce waste is paramount, which is why Novelis embraces its role in the Global Lighthouse Network. The company's ambitious 3x30 initiative aims to advance aluminum as a sustainable choice while striving to reduce carbon emissions to less than 3 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of flat-rolled product shipped. Additionally, Novelis targets an average of 75% recycled content across its offerings while leading the way towards circular solutions through significant investments.
Aluminum's inherent recyclability makes it a crucial material for minimizing the utilization of non-renewable resources. By promoting aluminum recycling, Novelis effectively reduces both environmental and economic impacts, resulting in a notable decrease in carbon emissions and landfill waste. Kiva Allgood, Head of the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains at WEF, remarked, "Across our Global Lighthouse Network, digital technologies are revolutionizing production ecosystems. Sustainability Lighthouses exemplify sustainable innovation and set benchmarks for others to follow in driving transformational change throughout the industry."
Joining the WEF's Global Lighthouse Network signifies Novelis' leadership within the industry, highlighting its partnerships, advanced technologies, and sustainable practices tailored to meet evolving challenges. This network, as established by the World Economic Forum, represents a collective of manufacturers implementing Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies to facilitate substantial improvements in financial, operational, and sustainability metrics across their factories and supply chains.
Sustainability Lighthouses are characterized by their proactive approach in addressing supply chain risks and commitments to lifecycle sustainability. They are utilizing data platforms for enhanced visibility into their operations and adopting innovative design tools and circularity solutions to minimize lifecycle emissions, thereby transforming their product portfolios and value chains.
