The Ellinikon Sports Park: A Major Milestone in Europe's Urban Transformation

The Ellinikon Sports Park: A Historical Moment

The highly anticipated Ellinikon Sports Park recently opened its doors to the public, signaling a crucial achievement in the ongoing urban transformation of Athens. With this development, The Ellinikon—the largest urban regeneration project in Europe, led by LAMDA Development—aims to revitalize the former Athens International Airport site into a modern coastal city surrounded by vibrant communities.

A New Public Space for All

Spanning 287,000 square meters, the Ellinikon Sports Park has been designed as an open and accessible venue catering to athletes, families, and tourists alike. This distinctive space merges sports, wellness, and public enjoyment, empowering its vision of a 15-minute city—where all necessary amenities can be reached within a short walk. The park features a variety of sporting facilities including completed tracks for athletics, football fields, tennis and basketball courts, as well as multi-functional recreational areas and spacious landscaped parks covering 115,000 square meters of greenery.

The park's capability as a venue for world-class events has already been demonstrated, attracting thousands of spectators to the EKO Super Special Stage during the 2026 FIA World Rally Championship. This showcased the potential for upcoming international competitions, community programs, and public events that are set to occur in this sprawling venue.

A Vision Realized

Odisseas Athanasiou, CEO of LAMDA Development, expressed pride in the park's public opening, highlighting its symbolic importance in the broader context of the Ellinikon project. He remarked, “This is a pivotal moment where The Ellinikon opens its doors for everyone, allowing citizens to experience the first tangible elements of a lifestyle transformation under Europe's largest urban regeneration project.” This demonstrates the commitment and belief in a vision that originated years ago.

As the sports park becomes functional, construction efforts continue across the various neighborhoods of The Ellinikon, with residential areas rapidly taking shape, significant retail destinations nearing completion, and the iconic Riviera Tower reaching its intended height.

Expanding Residential Opportunities

The residential offerings at Ellinikon are further expanding with the recent launch of “The Courtyards”, a new project in the Little Athens neighborhood. Developed by the esteemed Greek architectural firm AUDO Architects, this project encompasses 324 modern apartments spread across 11 buildings, featuring one to four-bedroom layouts inspired by contemporary Mediterranean living. Select penthouses boast expansive rooftops, while 35 ground-floor apartments offer private gardens complete with pools or Jacuzzis. Every unit will also include a dedicated parking space and storage.

Construction on these residential projects is progressing, with initial handovers expected by early 2027, followed by additional units throughout the year. In a notable milestone, the first fully completed show home in the Promenade Heights project was unveiled, providing a glimpse into the quality and craftsmanship envisioned for these residences.

Retail Expansion in Full Swing

The development of the Riviera Galleria, an upscale shopping and dining center designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, is also moving forward. Covering a total area of 23,000 square meters, the Galleria will feature a carefully curated mix of international and Greek fashion, lifestyle, and dining concepts, open from day to night. Its undulating architectural canopy draws inspiration from the movement of water and is expected to be completed in early 2027, with preliminary agreements already in place for 76% of the available rental space.

Meanwhile, work has commenced on the Ellinikon Mall, designed by the internationally acclaimed Aedas architectural firm. This project aims to become Greece's largest and most modern shopping center, set to feature 100,000 square meters of combined retail, dining, and entertainment spaces within a sustainable, hybrid framework of indoor and outdoor public areas. The strong interest from retailers is reflected in signed agreements that already cover 70% of the total rental area, preparing for a grand opening in 2029.

The inauguration of the Ellinikon Sports Park, alongside the ongoing construction milestones like the Riviera Tower and Galleria, signifies the tangible progression towards actualizing one of the most ambitious mixed-use development projects globally.
