New Survey Reveals Insights About Nutrition and Aging from NCOA and BOOST® Brand

In a significant revelation, a recent survey conducted by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and supported by the BOOST® brand delves into essential aspects of nutrition and physical activity among older adults. This investigation not only highlights the critical role of nutrition as individuals age but also identifies gaps in knowledge that persist in this demographic. The survey's findings showcase a strong awareness of healthy habits, with a substantial 97% of participants acknowledging the importance of consuming lean proteins such as eggs, beans, fish, and chicken for healthy aging. However, despite this high recognition, there is a disconnect when it comes to specifics concerning daily protein needs. Only 59% of those surveyed felt confident about how much protein they should consume on a daily basis. This statistic raises questions about potential areas for educational interventions, suggesting that while awareness exists, actionable knowledge may still be lacking.

Furthermore, the survey indicates that nearly 60% of respondents believe that appetite tends to decline as they age, a change often coupled with an understanding that older adults may need to consume fewer calories. Interestingly, while three-quarters of older adults anticipate experiencing joint discomfort as they grow older, a strong majority, 82%, disagree with the prevalent myth that being active exacerbates such joint pain. This represents a growing awareness among older adults that engaging in regular physical activity can enhance mobility and overall comfort.

Another key finding relates to the perception of nutritional drinks and supplements. Approximately 75% of the respondents expressed belief in the benefits of these products for maintaining health, showing confidence in their role as practical solutions to meet fluctuating dietary needs. According to Gretchen Dueñas-Tanbonliong, MS, MPH, RDN, MCHES®, Associate Director of Health and Wellness at NCOA, the data portrays older adults as being proactive about their health. However, she emphasizes the necessity for precise guidance regarding protein consumption and caloric adjustments tailored to aging individuals.

In response to these findings, the National Council on Aging has developed new educational resources aimed at equipping older adults and their caregivers with scientifically validated nutrition information, especially relating to protein intake. These efforts underscore the ongoing commitment to empower communities in the pursuit of healthful aging.

The survey gathered insights from over 2,100 respondents across the nation, investigating attitudes toward nutrition, physical activity, and health-related concerns attributed to aging. Results reveal an informed population that is keen on living healthily as they age but still requires additional support and resources.
