Okayama University Develops AI for Family-Based Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa

A New Paradigm in Family Support for Anorexia Nervosa



Anorexia nervosa is a severe mental health condition characterized by drastic weight loss, which can lead to life-threatening complications. This disorder primarily affects teenagers, and Family Based Treatment (FBT) has emerged as the most effective therapeutic approach. FBT encourages parents to play an active role in re-nourishing their children, yet the process can be emotionally taxing, often leading families to feel overwhelmed, especially during meal times. In many cases, families struggle with how to handle these challenges late at night or on weekends, making it difficult to continue treatment.

In response to this pressing need, a team at Okayama University, led by Professor Yoshitomo Hasei, has developed an innovative AI chatbot specifically designed to support families undergoing FBT. This initiative seeks to bridge the gaps in care families experience when traditional medical consultations are not available, such as during off-hours.

The AI chatbot provides round-the-clock assistance and is built on a wealth of knowledge surrounding FBT, functioning as a supportive partner for families. With over 90% of its responses deemed appropriate and safe by medical professionals during testing, the chatbot represents a significant step forward in providing reliable support.

Filling the Void in Family Support



The burden on families dealing with anorexia is profound, marked by intense emotional struggles at the dining table. The development of this AI aims to alleviate some of these pressures by delivering timely advice when families need it most, reinforcing the idea that they are not alone in the fight against this illness.

Professor Hasei notes, “When facing intense adversities at the dining table, having immediate access to appropriate suggestions for communication and management can be a game-changer for families. That’s why we have developed this chatbot in collaboration with the Pediatric Psychosomatic Medicine Department.” The AI is equipped with a unique algorithm designed to not only provide information but also to genuinely empathize with the emotional challenges faced by families during treatment.

Future Developments



The AI is set to undergo phased trials with families starting in February 2026, where its performance and accuracy will be further refined based on real-time feedback from users. This initiative is part of a broader effort to advance the application of generative AI in medical settings and represents a symbolic model for digital transformation (DX) in healthcare.

This project has been made possible through the generous support of several foundations, including the Mishima Kaikun Memorial Foundation and the Meiji Yasuda Mental Health Foundation, among others.

As it stands, the AI chatbot is poised to become not just a tool but a lifeline for families, enabling many children to embark on a path toward recovery alongside their families.
