Japan Property Management's Nationwide Safety Conferences
Japan Property Management Holdings, based in Tokyo's Chuo district, recently announced that its group company Japan Property Management Co., will oversee safety conferences under the auspices of the Japan Property Management Safety and Health Cooperation Association. These events are set to take place nationwide from September 4 to October 10, 2025, focusing on preventing labor accidents and enhancing safety awareness.
Why Establish a Safety and Health Cooperation Association?
According to the latest statistics from 2024, there were 135,718 injuries and fatalities due to labor accidents in Japan, with the building maintenance sector recording 3,743 cases (accounting for 2.8% of all industries) and the security industry accounting for 2,088 cases (1.5%). While safety and health cooperation associations are typically found in higher-risk industries like construction and manufacturing, Japan Property Management recognizes the serious impact labor accidents can have on individuals and their families. Consequently, they have established one of the few such associations in the building maintenance industry, aiming to fundamentally improve the safety awareness of all employees, including those from partner companies.
The association focuses on sharing successful case studies and improvement measures among members, organizing external lectures, and conducting annual safety prayer ceremonies, all dedicated to the mission of reducing labor accidents.
Overview of the Safety Conference
The safety conference for 2025 was conducted as a hybrid event, combining both in-person and online formats across six regional branches.
Tokyo Venue:
In Tokyo, 101 participants from 52 companies attended, including Japan Property Management employees. The head of the Central Labor Standards Inspection Office delivered a keynote address highlighting two psychological principles: the increased awareness of danger when prioritizing safety, and the necessity of considering safety as a personal responsibility, rather than a distant concern. The conference also included an awards ceremony for outstanding slogans, a report on near-miss incidents collected from member companies, and a special lecture.
Highlight: Special Lecture on Safety Techniques from Antarctic Explorers
A notable part of the conference featured Mr. Yoichi Shinohara, who has years of experience cooking for Antarctic research teams, delivering an impactful lecture on safety and communication.
He emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety above all else. He noted that accidents can lead to devastating physical and emotional distress for individuals and their families, as well as significant repercussions for businesses involved. Furthermore, he urged maintaining mental well-being and managing interpersonal relationships effectively in professional environments. By mastering key psychological strategies, such as the '262 rule', he advised minimizing unnecessary frustration and efficiently addressing issues when correcting subordinates.
Kansai Venue:
Meanwhile, in Kansai, the conference took place at the Nishinomiya Frente Hall, with 143 participants from 78 companies. This event included an interactive session led by Junta Kawatani from Brain Revolution Inc., focusing on enhancing latent abilities to recognize hazards.
Reporting on 2025 Near-Miss Incidents
As part of the session, attendees were presented with a well-analyzed report on 241 near-miss cases collected from 49 member companies. Noteworthy was the finding that 'falls' constituted only 31% of reported incidents, compared to the national average of 48%. This discrepancy suggests a general underrecognition of risks like slipping or wet floors.
Furthermore, with 23 reported cases related to heatstroke, it was discussed that the recent modifications to labor safety regulations mandating heatstroke prevention measures in workplaces were crucial. Cases highlighting heatstroke occurrences in various environments, even with air conditioning, were reviewed, reinforcing the need for regular breaks and adjustments to working hours to ensure safety.
