Okayama University Introduces Innovative Research Instrument Rental Platform.

Okayama University's SX Platform: A Game Changer in Research Instruments

On May 14, 2026, Okayama University, led by President Yasunori Nasu, marked a significant step in research innovation by introducing the first domestic triple quadrupole gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS) through its new rental platform, SX (Shared Transformation). This platform aims to improve the management and accessibility of research instruments, fostering collaboration in various scientific fields.

The newly installed GC-MS, designed by JEOL Ltd., offers high sensitivity and rapid detection capabilities, making it invaluable for analyzing trace compounds in numerous domains such as food safety, environmental monitoring, engineering, and pharmaceuticals. The platform allows researchers to shift from traditional purchasing methods to a more flexible rental option, significantly reducing the financial burden associated with installation, maintenance, repair, and removal costs.

In his comments, Associate Professor Naritake Juki, who oversaw the selection of this instrument, noted the importance of overcoming previous challenges in financing shared equipment. He stated, "The SX platform allows us to install versatile devices necessary for identifying low-molecular compounds without worrying about installation and maintenance costs. We aim to attract users not just from our university but from surrounding institutions and companies, facilitating research and product development."

The SX platform's structure represents a shift in mindset, moving from ownership to shared usage, thus promoting a culture of collaboration in research. Vice President Norihito Sato emphasized that this initiative is crucial for improving Japan's research infrastructure. He remarked, "The installation of the first SX platform model was made possible through the efforts of numerous stakeholders. It’s essential that we not only identify operational challenges but also cultivate a rental culture in our research community. Enhancing the research environment is a pressing issue, and stepping out of our traditional practices is necessary. We hope to lead in this transformative process."

Beginning June 4, 2026, this state-of-the-art equipment will be fully operational, with user training sessions scheduled for early September. The initiative is part of Okayama University’s commitment to strengthen its research foundation and promote the shared use of research instruments. As a designated university for the
