Ikebana with Animals: Junior High Students Experience Vet Life at Shinjuku Gyoen Animal Hospital

Workplace Experience at Shinjuku Gyoen Animal Hospital

On July 8, 11, and 15, 2025, Anicom Group, a leader in the pet insurance sector, held an engaging workplace experience at their Shinjuku Gyoen Animal Hospital for nine third-year junior high school students. This initiative not only gives students insight into veterinary medicine but also allows them to appreciate the skills and compassion required to care for animals.

Experience Overview

The program encompassed various activities designed to immerse students in the veterinary environment under the guidance of experienced staff.

Hospital Tour

The first part of the experience included a guided tour of the hospital. Students were taken to areas normally off-limits to the public, such as the examination room and operating theater, where they could witness veterinary healthcare procedures up close.

Observing Consultations

Next, students observed a consultation for a cat receiving vaccinations. Through this observation, they learned about the importance of building trust with pet owners and the critical role of effective communication in veterinary practice.

Surgical Observations

The students also had the opportunity to observe emergency procedures. They witnessed how the veterinary team quickly assessed and treated a dog suspected of ingesting a foreign object, as well as a laparoscopic spay surgery. This experience gave students a glimpse into the high-pressure environment and teamwork that are essential in animal healthcare.

Suturing Practice

One of the highlights was hands-on suturing practice. Using surgical instruments, students attempted to suture simulated skin (using raw meat) under supervision. They found this task challenging but enjoyable, gaining valuable insight into the dexterity required in veterinary procedures.

Student Reactions

The students expressed their thoughts on this remarkable experience as follows:
  • - “I was thrilled to see real surgeries up close. It was a unique opportunity to feel the atmosphere of an actual working environment.”
  • - “The suturing was harder than I expected, but it was a ton of fun! I’m glad I got to experience something so valuable.”
  • - “I was impressed by how the veterinarians and nurses communicated non-verbally during surgery. It highlighted the importance of teamwork in veterinary care.”
  • - “Caring for animals requires more knowledge, skills, and determination than I imagined. I experienced the profound responsibilities of the profession, which has deepened my interest in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.”

Staff Perspectives

The staff at Shinjuku Gyoen Animal Hospital shared their reflections on hosting the students:
  • - “I remembered my own interest in being a veterinarian when I was their age. It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm and curiosity.” (Dr. Nagaoka, Vice Director)
  • - “Explaining surgical and consultation procedures in a way the students could understand mirrored my daily interactions with pet owners. Engaging with them reminded me of the joy in my work.” (Dr. Sugiya)
  • - “At first, they were a bit confused during the suturing activity, but they improved quickly and succeeded in their task. Their enjoyment made the day memorable.” (Dr. Arima)
  • - “The students were eager to learn, asking thoughtful questions during the tour and demonstrating a serious attitude during the operations. I hope this experience sparks further curiosity and interest for them.” (Nurse Naka)
