Reflecting on Peace: Insights from the 6.23 Family Peace Walk in Okinawa

On July 28, 2026, a significant online meeting was held to discuss the 6.23 Family Peace Walk, which took place in Itoman City, Okinawa, as part of the Prefectural Memorial Day. This event was organized by the Pal System Federation, with its headquarters in Shinjuku, Tokyo, led by Chairman Atsuyuki Shibusawa. Many expressed a heightened awareness of peace, stating, "My interest in peace has increased significantly," and, "I deeply felt the importance of peace." They encouraged others, especially those who previously lacked exposure to discussions about war and peace, to seize this rare opportunity that could only be felt on-site.

The Pal System Federation has actively participated in this initiative since the 2023 fiscal year, with plans to continue its involvement in future events. This commitment highlights the organization's broader goal of cultivating awareness and significance around peace.

Marching in Itoman City on Memorial Day

The Family Peace Walk is officially designated to occur on June 23, Okinawa's Memorial Day. This day commemorates the end of organized combat by Japanese forces, marking a time when numerous memorial services are held across the prefecture to honor fallen soldiers.

This year, 12 officials from both the Pal System Federation and the Pal System Mutual Aid Cooperative Federation participated. They marched alongside representatives from 13 other groups and local residents through Itoman City, known for its intense battles, in a 90-minute procession.

Collecting Messages for Peace

Participants held banners that displayed messages collected to spread awareness for peace during the march. The unity amongst cooperative workers from around the country highlighted a shared commitment to the vision of peace.
