Purina's Generous Donation of 45,000 Pounds of Dog Food to Alaskan Communities Affected by Typhoon Halong

On April 1, 2026, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company announced a significant contribution to rural communities in Western Alaska, providing a staggering 45,000 pounds of Purina dog food. This gesture is aimed at helping both pets and people within these regions that are still grappling with the aftermath of Typhoon Halong, which struck in October 2025, causing catastrophic destruction including hurricane-force winds and severe flooding that impacted nearly 50 rural and native communities.

The role of dogs in these remote regions is crucial. They not only serve as beloved companions but also play a vital role in daily activities, providing transportation and safety to their owners. Hence, their access to nutritious food is of utmost importance in ensuring their well-being during recovery.

Purina's mission is centered around supporting communities during crises. They collaborated with Greater Good Charities, an organization dedicated to animal welfare, to efficiently coordinate the logistics of this donation. The shipment of dog food was meticulously organized, comprising a full truckload transported from Purina's factory in Eden, North Carolina, to a port in Tacoma, Washington.

To cover the shipping costs, an emergency grant from the Purina Foundation was utilized, amounting to over $6,000. From Tacoma, the dog food is now being transported by Alaska Native Rural Veterinary, Inc., alongside various transportation partners to ensure timely delivery to the affected communities.

Dr. Arleigh Reynolds, a retired veterinarian and current medical advisor at the Alaska Native Rural Veterinary, Inc., emphasized the profound impact of such support. He stated, "Dogs play a significant role in the emotional and mental health resilience during recovery from traumatic events like this typhoon. Purina’s long-standing commitment to helping pets and their owners is evident through this lifesaving support."

Another important voice, Angie Fitch, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Alaska Native Rural Veterinary, Inc., highlighted the ongoing need for assistance in remote areas. "Access to food can be a real challenge long after a disaster makes headlines. Purina's generosity alongside the efforts of many transportation partners will make a meaningful difference for dog owners in communities still recovering months after Typhoon Halong."

Recognizing the persistent challenges that many communities face post-disaster, Purina not only focused on producing and donating the food but worked diligently with Greater Good Charities to meticulously manage the logistics involved in the transportation. The collaboration involved notable partners like TOTE Maritime, Carlile Transportation, Alaska Air Transit, Resolve Aviation, and Aleutian Airways, ensuring that the dog food reaches those who truly need it.

Kim Beardslee, Director of Community Affairs at Purina, articulates the company's dedication, stating, "Recovery doesn’t end when the storm passes, especially in rural and remote communities. We are proud to collaborate with trusted partners to ensure that pets and people have the necessary resources as these communities continue to rebuild."

This donation is more than just food; it is a lifeline for many families who rely on their pets. Purina has a robust history of engaging in community support, particularly during natural disasters. They focus on meeting vital needs where access to resources is limited, reinforcing their commitment to ensuring that pets receive the care they deserve as communities heal.

Nestlé Purina PetCare has long been at the forefront of pet nutrition and care. Founded in 1894, the company emphasizes the health and well-being of pets, contributing over $150 million over the past five years to organizations that help keep people and pets together.
