West-MEC Launches Construction of Innovative Southeast Campus in Glendale
On February 25, 2025, the Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC) celebrated a significant milestone by breaking ground on its latest Southeast Campus at W. 93rd Ave. and Osborn Road in Glendale, Arizona. The ceremony marked the beginning of West-MEC's fifth campus, which is strategically located near the thriving medical corridor at Loop 101 and Thomas.
Meeting Evolving Workforce Needs
During the groundbreaking ceremony, West-MEC Superintendent Dr. Scott Spurgeon expressed pride in the new facility, emphasizing that it was designed to meet the changing workforce demands of the West Valley. The campus aims to provide comprehensive training and educational programs that equip students with vital skills needed in today's job market. Partnerships with notable industry leaders, including Amazon, Amkor, Gatorade, Nestle, and TSMC, have significantly influenced the design of the campus, ensuring that the curriculum aligns with real-world job requirements.
Dr. Spurgeon stated, "This campus will serve as a pivotal point for educational excellence and workforce development in our community, reflecting our commitment to providing high-quality opportunities for students."
About the Campus Design and Facilities
Spread over 30 acres, the Southeast Campus will feature state-of-the-art facilities with a focus on Career and Technical Education (CTE). The first phase of construction will bring approximately 50,000 square feet of educational space, which will offer various CTE pathways, including but not limited to medical assisting, physical therapy, IT security, advanced manufacturing, and welding. The design also incorporates community and industry event spaces, fostering interaction among students, educators, and industry partners.
Matt Brehmer, Principal and Architect at DLR Group, highlighted the growth of the Phoenix metro area and its significance for Arizona's workforce. He remarked, "This project aligns with the remarkable developments in the region and will deliver substantial benefits to both students and the local economy."
A Collaborative Effort
Construction services will be managed by the CHASSE Building Team, which is committed to collaborating closely with West-MEC and design partners throughout the project. Barry Chasse, the president of CHASSE Building Team, commented on the importance of creating open and collaborative learning environments. The design will utilize glass-partitioned walls to encourage transparency and interaction between students and educators, leading to dynamic educational experiences.
"We are excited to partner with West-MEC to realize this forward-thinking design that creates engaging and flexible learning spaces," said Chasse.
Looking Ahead
With the completion anticipated by the summer of 2026, the new Southeast Campus is set to be a vital resource for the West Valley's student population. By focusing on practical skills and industry alignment, West-MEC is not only preparing students for high-demand careers but is also contributing to the economic development of the region. As this project progresses through the different phases of construction, the local community and industry partners will undoubtedly benefit from the educational advancements brought about by West-MEC.
As the campus begins to take shape, West-MEC remains committed to its mission of empowering students through education and workforce readiness, ensuring that the future is bright and rich with opportunities for all.
