Education Cannot Wait Announces Emergency Fund for Flood-Affected Children in Pakistan
Education Cannot Wait: A Lifeline for Flood-Affected Children in Pakistan
In response to the devastating floods caused by the recent monsoon season in Pakistan, Education Cannot Wait (ECW) has announced a generous grant of $2 million aimed at addressing the urgent educational needs of impacted children. This initiative focuses on reaching out to over 34,000 school-aged children through partnerships with local organizations, particularly the Rural Support Programmes Network (RSPN) and its consortiums.
The situation in flood-affected districts is dire, with over 367,000 children currently lacking access to education, as more than 1,800 schools have sustained damage. The funding announced by ECW will be utilized over the next 12 months to restore infrastructure, create temporary learning spaces, and provide essential learning materials that are inclusive and gender-sensitive.
Bashir Anjum, Chief Operating Officer at RSPN, expressed pride in continuing the partnership with ECW and the Government of Pakistan. The collaboration aims to ensure that every child, including vulnerable groups such as girls, internally displaced individuals, and children with disabilities, can access quality educational opportunities.
“To rebuild resilient educational systems in the affected communities, we are fostering hope and helping children return to learning in safe and supportive environments,” Anjum stated. “Together, we are transforming dreams into opportunities and education into sustainable hope for the most vulnerable.”
The intervention will focus on provinces severely hit by the floods, such as Sialkot, Narowal, Jhang, and Swat. ECW's investment will not only cover the repairs to damaged schools but will also enhance sanitation facilities, ensuring that returning students have access to clean water and proper hygiene—an essential factor for health and safety during learning.
This funding is a part of Pakistan’s broader humanitarian response plan, complementing the pilot project by ECW which had already deployed educational materials prior to the floods. As communities begin the long process of recovery, access to education remains a critical area of focus. ECW is working diligently to bridge immediate relief efforts with long-term solutions, ensuring that the education system can withstand future challenges.
Education Cannot Wait is recognized as the global fund of the United Nations dedicated to education in emergencies and prolonged crises. Their mission is to promote quality educational outcomes for all children who are refugees, displaced, or affected by other crises to prevent them from being left behind. The organization collaborates with public and private donors, UN agencies, civil society organizations, and other humanitarian and development actors, aiming to enhance the efficacy beyond isolated responses.
Currently, ECW is making an urgent call for increased contributions from both public and private sectors to help support even more vulnerable children and youth. The overarching goal is to ensure that education remains a prioritized component of humanitarian responses, facilitating recovery and resilience in communities affected by disasters, such as the recent floods in Pakistan.
