Lutzie 43 Foundation Returns for a Safe Driving Summit
The Lutzie 43 Foundation, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT), is set to host its second annual Safe Driving Summit at Stephens County High School in Toccoa, Georgia, on August 28, 2025. Highlighting the alarming issues of distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving, this event aims to instill safe driving practices among local high school students.
This collaboration showcases a substantial commitment to nurturing safer driving habits among the youth in the community. Having successfully held the event last year, thanks to the initiative of Jenna Boyd, Trauma Community Outreach and Injury Prevention Coordinator at the North Georgia Medical Center, the foundation is excited to return for another engagement, this time at the direct invitation of Principal Jessica Simmons.
The 43 Key Seconds Initiative
Central to the summit is the 43 Key Seconds safe driving initiative. The initiative focuses on a crucial 43-second window, encouraging drivers to make wise decisions that can prevent accidents. This tangible message will be shared through stories of real-world incidents as well as the presentation of the 43 Key Seconds checklist aimed at reinforcing driving awareness.
Mike Lutzenkirchen, the executive director of the Lutzie 43 Foundation, is set to deliver a heartfelt keynote speech recounting the tragic story of his son Philip, whose life was cut short by a distracted driving accident back in 2014. The aim of sharing such poignant tales is to create a lasting impact that incites action in the young minds attending the summit.
A Collaborative Educational Experience
In addition to Lutzenkirchen's address, students will hear insights from various specialists. Medical experts, public safety authorities, Georgia DOT officials, and professional truck drivers will all contribute to the comprehensive educational experience crafted for the attendees.
An interactive structure has been retained from last year’s successful format. Students will participate in breakout sessions that involve first responders, law enforcement officers, trauma experts, and industry specialists. These sessions are designed to provide firsthand accounts of the consequences of unsafe driving behaviors, empowering students with knowledge and strategies to navigate their driving phases more safely.
Principal Jessica Simmons emphasized the role of education in preparing students not just academically, but for life. She stated, “As educators, our responsibility goes beyond the classroom. We want to prepare students for life,” underscoring the importance of continually reinforcing safe driving behaviors among young drivers.
