March 2 is SAF Day: Join JAL for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiatives

March 2 is SAF Day with JAL

Every year on March 2, the aviation industry celebrates SAF Day—an initiative by Japan Airlines (JAL) to promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This date holds significant importance as JAL has been a pioneer in Asia, successfully completing test flights with SAF since 2009. Over the last decade, the airline has actively worked on various projects, like "Fry to Fly Project" and "ACT FOR SKY," aimed at commercializing SAF and facilitating its usage across the industry.

In an effort to cultivate a greater understanding and use of SAF, JAL is launching an interactive campaign on March 2, inviting customers to bring their used cooking oil to designated locations in exchange for 32 SAF miles. This initiative seeks not only to raise awareness about SAF but also to contribute to reducing carbon emissions by promoting recycling and sustainable practices.

Bringing Used Cooking Oil for Rewards

Through the campaign titled "Let's Fly with the Oil You Discard®," JAL encourages households to participate by collecting used cooking oil, thereby utilizing it as a raw material for SAF production. Since the project's inception, it has gathered an impressive total of 19,435 liters of discarded cooking oil. Currently, this program has extended its reach to 235 locations across 111 municipalities in Japan, making it easier for more people to join this eco-friendly effort.

On March 2, during specified time slots, customers who bring in used cooking oil can earn 32 SAF miles. Here are the participating locations along with their respective times:
  • - Hokkaido: Aeon Chitose (11:00–13:00)
  • - Akita: Axes Foods Market Rokugo (10:30–12:00)
  • - Kanagawa: Shokuhin-kan Aoba Honmoku (10:00–12:00)
  • - Aichi: Aoki Super Azpark (10:00–12:00)
  • - Osaka: Sunplaza Tomitaky (11:30–12:30)
  • - Fukuoka: Izutsuya (10:00–12:00)

JAL's Commitment to SAF

JAL's strong commitment to promoting SAF extends beyond this campaign. By participating in initiatives like "ACT FOR SKY," JAL collaborates with various stakeholders to enhance the domestic supply of SAF and address challenges such as stabilizing supply and reducing costs. This collective effort is aimed at creating a robust supply chain for SAF, making it accessible to everyone.

The "Fry to Fly Project" directly utilizes discarded cooking oil as a resource for producing SAF, making it a vital part of Japan's decarbonization efforts. This project not only fosters circular resource use but also provides an opportunity for families and businesses to partake in the global fight against climate change.

Additionally, JAL is engaged in the "Mori Sora Project," which aims to produce SAF using bioethanol derived from domestically sourced wood materials. This initiative, in collaboration with other organizations, seeks to promote the growth of SAF that is both environmentally friendly and locally sourced.

Furthermore, JAL is a key participant in the "oneworld Breakthrough Energy Ventures Fund," which focuses on investing in innovative and cost-competitive SAF technology to expand the future aviation fuel market.

The JAL Corporate SAF Program (JCSP) is another initiative that converts the CO2 reduction benefits driven by SAF into certificates for corporate customers using JAL flights. Within a short period, the program has attracted participation from various sectors, showcasing the broad interest in sustainable aviation.
