Exciting Student Showcase at Birmingham Event Celebrating K-12 Education Choices

Birmingham Event to Shine a Light on Student Voices

On January 28, 2026, Birmingham, Alabama, is set to become a vibrant hub of inspiration and talent as over 400 K-12 students from across the state gather for a unique celebration at the Carver Theatre for the Performing Arts. This event coincides with National School Choice Week and aims to highlight the numerous education options available to families.

The showcase will primarily focus on student-led contributions, featuring speakers who will share their personal experiences and the positive impacts that school choice has had on their educational journeys. The event will also include engaging dance performances and art showcases, offering a platform for students to express their creativity and talents.

Neonta Williams, the Founder and Executive Director of Black Alabamians for Education, emphasized the importance of educational choice, stating, "Educational choice is about unlocking doors. When families can choose, communities grow stronger. This celebration is about giving them the stage, showcasing talent, and showing that every learning path can be exciting and lead to success."

Alabama has made significant strides over the past decade in expanding school choice options, resulting in a more diverse landscape of education alternatives. Families can now access various learning environments including public, charter, magnet, private, online, home, and non-traditional options. Such variety empowers parents to select the best-fit educational pathways for their children, ultimately enhancing educational outcomes throughout the Yellowhammer State.

The event is organized by Black Alabamians for Education in collaboration with the National School Choice Awareness Foundation. It's scheduled to take place from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, and is open to families, educators, and community members eager to partake in this celebration of choice in education.

Furthermore, National School Choice Week, which spans from January 25 to 31, encompasses 28,000 events across the nation aimed at raising awareness about the range of educational options available to families. The goal is to empower parents, providing them with the resources to navigate the variety of choices that best cater to their children's needs.

The National School Choice Awareness Foundation, a non-profit organization, plays a crucial role in guiding families through the school selection process, ensuring that every child receives the education that aligns with their unique needs. Their mission, along with the numerous events held during National School Choice Week, is to foster informed decisions among parents and accentuate the importance of personal agency in educational choices.
