Dandelion Energy and Vermont Gas Launch Innovative Geothermal Heating Initiative

Dandelion Energy and Vermont Gas Collaborative Geothermal Project

Dandelion Energy and Vermont Gas (VGS) have made a significant advancement by announcing a groundbreaking partnership to provide renewable geothermal heating and cooling at Riggs Meadow, an affordable housing development located in Hinesburg, Vermont. This initiative marks the first implementation in the United States of a natural gas utility collaborating to improve access to geothermal energy for residents.

The CEO of Dandelion Energy, Dan Yates, emphasized the importance of this alliance, stating, "Partnerships with utilities like VGS enable us to broaden geothermal accessibility. This initiative is pivotal in establishing geothermal energy as a mainstream and affordable solution for housing developers. Utility-owned ground loops will help decarbonize housing effectively, affording equitable clean energy access."

Vermont Gas’s President and CEO Neale Lunderville expressed prospects about the collaboration, saying, "Geothermal energy offers an exceptional route to provide cost-effective renewable heating and cooling solutions to a broader range of Vermonters. Partnering with Dandelion Energy allows us to explore innovative ways geothermal can cater to community requirements, especially as Vermont strives to rapidly expand housing availability."

Situated in Hinesburg, the Riggs Meadow development will include 44 housing units, comprised of townhomes and apartments, aimed at low- and moderate-income renters and owners. This project emerged from a collaboration between Champlain Housing Trust and Evernorth, which sought to integrate geothermal heating and cooling in their developments. The financial backing from VGS in the upfront costs of geothermal ground loops significantly alleviates barriers for developers and future occupants, while Dandelion Energy will oversee the complete geothermal system's design and installation.

Transforming Geothermal Business Models

As scrutiny increases on affordable and efficient heating solutions, the burgeoning partnership sets a precedent for how gas utilities can innovate and diversify their service offerings. Dandelion’s geothermal systems leverage the consistent underground temperatures to deliver high-efficiency heating and cooling through all seasons. The model devised through this partnership directly addresses previous cost challenges, ensuring that low- to moderate-income residents in Vermont can benefit from this transition toward renewable energy.

Closing the Clean Energy Gap

The synergy between Dandelion Energy and Vermont Gas exemplifies a scalable model for accessible geothermal heating technology. With the utility investing in the individual ground loops, affordable housing developers can enhance their projects with geothermal features, leading to significant benefits for future residents:

1. Clean Heating and Cooling: Residents will enjoy clean, all-electric heating and cooling that performs efficiently even during Vermont's harsh winters.
2. Long-Term Price Stability: Geothermal offers stable energy prices, providing reassurance for housing occupants, particularly those in affordable situations where fluctuating energy costs can pose challenges.
3. Efficient Energy Use: With its low and steady demand, geothermal stands out as one of the most efficient electric heating methods available, thus benefiting the overall grid stability.

Construction activities are set to initiate early next year, with homeowners expected to occupy their residences by late 2027.
