HMH Celebrates Educational Excellence with Annual 180 Awards
In an inspiring tribute to both students and educators, HMH, a pioneer in adaptive learning solutions, has unveiled the recipients of its 19th Annual 180 Awards. This celebrated event, coinciding with Teacher Appreciation Week, shines a spotlight on exceptional individuals who have harnessed the power of HMH’s Read 180 and Math 180 programs to demonstrate remarkable growth and leadership.
A National Recognition Program
The 180 Awards are not just accolades but a national recognition program dedicated to honoring those who have made significant strides in education through innovative and effective intervention strategies. The nominees—students who have encountered and conquered personal and academic hurdles and educators dedicated to inspiring learning—are put forward by their peers, coaches, intervention specialists, parents, and school leaders from across the United States.
Matthew Mugo Fields, the General Manager of Supplemental and Intervention Solutions at HMH, emphasized, “The 180 Awards are a testament to the resilience and determination of our students and the incredible impact our educators make every day.” He went on to highlight that these awards remind us that with the right support and resources, every student is equipped to achieve remarkable success.
Focus on Growth and Empowerment
The programs, Read 180 and Math 180, focus on providing targeted instruction combined with adaptive technology tailored for students in grades 3-12 who require extra assistance. These interventions are particularly effective for multilingual learners and those with learning differences, aiming to close learning gaps and promote equitable education. In fact, this year, nearly 400 nominations flooded in from 33 states, each sharing compelling narratives of breakthrough learning.
Among this year's student awardees, 32% identify as multilingual learners and 28% receive special education services, highlighting how the Read and Math 180 programs empower all students to achieve meaningful progress in their educational journeys.
Inspiring and Transformative Stories
The tales shared by this year's winners reflect a stunning cross-section of learners—from elementary students to high school seniors. These young scholars have surmounted various obstacles, such as overcoming language barriers, regaining academic confidence, and setting collegiate and career goals for the first time. Nathan A., a student from John W. Dodd Middle School in New York, recalls his journey: “I know it wasn’t easy at first, but I kept pushing myself because I wanted to get better. The more I practiced, the easier it became to understand the words and stories. Now, I feel more confident and excited to read.”
Additionally, the educator winners represent diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise but are united in their dedication to impactful instruction. Megan Gibson, a Read 180 teacher from Arkansas, shared her gratitude: “Thank you for the honor of being selected for this award. My team and I have so much enthusiasm for intervention and our students showcase the curriculum's worth through their growth and success.”
Community and Future Aspirations
The 180 Awards foster a growing national community that champions perseverance and strong instructional practices. These awards are more than just a celebration; they illuminate what is possible when educational interventions are applied with intention, creating ripples of hope and progress throughout classrooms across the nation.
