Okayama University Hosts Traffic Safety Workshop for Preschoolers

Traffic Safety Workshop at Nakayoshi Nursery

On October 14, 2025, Okayama University held a lively traffic safety workshop at Nakayoshi Nursery, aimed at preschoolers aged three to five. Approximately 30 children participated in the event, which was led by traffic safety instructors from Okayama City’s Safety Division. The objective was to educate the young children on traffic safety rules and raise their awareness about potential hazards in an engaging manner.

The workshop began indoors, where the instructors used a storytelling approach with picture books to illustrate important traffic safety messages. The children enthusiastically raised their hands to answer questions about dangerous situations and incorrect behaviors while navigating traffic. A highlight of the session was the introduction of a safety catchphrase for children: "Ikano Osushi." This phrase serves as a reminder for children to stay safe around strangers. The children energetically repeated the mantra, emphasizing the importance of awareness and caution.

After the indoor instruction, the event moved outside to the nursery’s playground, where the real hands-on learning began. A pedestrian crosswalk was outlined with white lines, and the children practiced crossing the street with raised hands, resembling real-life traffic situations. They learned to interpret traffic signals and road signs, reinforcing their understanding of traffic rules in a practical setting.

Feedback from the participating preschoolers was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed how enjoyable it was to learn about traffic rules, while others shared their experiences of facing challenges, such as stopping abruptly at a red light or feeling scared of strangers following them. This interactive experience highlighted the importance of understanding traffic regulations and personal safety in a fun and memorable way.
