Enhancing Community Engagement: Dormy Tachikawa North's Children's Study Session

Enhancing Community Engagement: The 3rd Children's Study Session at Dormy Tachikawa North

From August 1 to August 4, 2025, Dormy Tachikawa North, managed by Kyoritsu Maintenance, will host its 3rd Children's Study Session. This initiative combines academic support and community engagement, encouraging resident students to create a collaborative environment for local children.

Background of the Initiative

The Children’s Study Session is a key component of the Resident Assistant (RA) program, a framework aimed at transforming student dormitories into spaces of diverse experiences. Dormitory students, empowered as RAs, plan and execute this event, fostering a sense of community while supporting children's educational needs during summer vacation.

Activities planned for the event include summer homework assistance and unique workshops, allowing local kids to explore creative projects. Each day offers engaging learning experiences combined with tasty meals prepared by dormitory cooking staff, strengthening the bond between residents and the local community.

Event Schedule and Activities

The event will run daily from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, with the exception of August 3 when it begins at noon. The lineup of activities includes:
  • - August 1: Summer homework help and a workshop on natural-dyed handkerchief creation.
  • - August 2: Homework support alongside a marshmallow and pasta tower building workshop.
  • - August 3: Free meal offerings including pork curry and shell macaroni salad, coupled with a workshop for creating personalized flower arrangements.
  • - August 4: Homework assistance and an educational game combining themes of space and learning.

A Platform for Learning

The feedback from previous sessions has been overwhelmingly positive, indicating the strong desire within the community for ongoing educational opportunities. This year marks the third iteration of the event, which aims to establish a beloved learning environment for children from the neighborhood.

Future Goals

Through this initiative, Kyoritsu Maintenance aims to contribute significantly to several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on eliminating poverty, achieving zero hunger, and ensuring inclusive quality education. By facilitating interactions between residents and local youth, the program underscores the importance of developing communication skills and enhancing community ties.

In addition to supporting local educational needs, the RA program also aims to foster social engagement by creating networks that connect RA graduates with current residents, compelling them to stay involved in the community even after leaving the dormitory.

Community Perspective

According to the RA team at Dormy Tachikawa North, hosting the Children's Study Session since its inception two years ago has been a rewarding endeavor. They aim to deepen connections with local families through educational support while cultivating meaningful relationships within the community. This year’s projects are tailored to provide exciting new experiences, combining diverse expertise with creativity in workshops that allow local children to learn and grow.
