BioMarin Welcomes Cara Bauer as Their New Chief People Officer
BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. has made a significant leadership change by appointing Cara Bauer, Ph.D., as their Chief People Officer, effective October 5, 2026. This strategic move comes as the company continues to strengthen its human resources organization and further support its mission in the biopharmaceutical landscape.
Cara Bauer boasts an impressive track record, bringing over 25 years of robust experience in human resources, particularly within the biotechnology and technology sectors. Before joining BioMarin, she served as the Chief Human Resources Officer at Kyverna Therapeutics, where she excelled in managing HR functions while nurturing talent and maintaining organizational growth.
Prior to her role at Kyverna, Bauer held global HR leadership roles at prominent companies, including Kite Pharma, a Gilead company, and Riot Games, where she was instrumental in cultivating strong workplace cultures that prioritized innovation and employee growth. Her previous experiences at Netflix, Amgen, and Novo Nordisk showcase her versatility and ability to adapt HR strategies to drive results in various sectors.
In her new role at BioMarin, Bauer will take over from Amy Wireman, who will retire after a notable tenure with the company. During her time at BioMarin, Wireman played a pivotal role in expanding the organization, supporting the launch and commercialization of several groundbreaking medicines aimed at addressing the needs of patients with rare genetic diseases. Her contributions have been recognized across the industry, and she will remain with the company in an advisory capacity to ensure a smooth transition.
Alexander Hardy, President and CEO of BioMarin, expressed confidence in Bauer’s leadership abilities. He remarked, "Cara is an experienced business leader who brings a significant breadth of knowledge in human resources across multiple sectors. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated the ability to drive large-scale transformation, taking an innovative approach to building high-performing organizations and developing talent."
In her own words, Bauer highlighted the significance of BioMarin’s mission, saying, "For nearly 30 years, BioMarin has worked to advance breakthrough treatments for people with rare genetic diseases and that shapes how I think about growing teams, developing talent and strengthening organizational capabilities."
Her vision aligns closely with BioMarin’s commitment to ensuring that patients are at the heart of their operations while fostering an environment that encourages scientific innovation. Bauer’s educational background includes a bachelor's degree in industrial and organizational psychology from DePaul University, complemented by a doctorate in the same field from Wayne State University.
As BioMarin continues to leverage its expertise in rare genetic disorders, the leadership of Cara Bauer is expected to enhance both organizational capacity and workplace culture. As they embark on this new chapter, Bauer’s extensive experience will be crucial in guiding the company through its next phase of growth.
With a strong pipeline of clinical developments and ongoing commitment to innovation, BioMarin stands poised to make significant strides in delivering therapeutic solutions for patients in need. As the company navigates this transition, the collaboration between new leadership and established advisory support aligns with their strategic goals for the future. The industry eagerly anticipates the impact of Bauer’s leadership in shaping BioMarin’s workplace ethos and commitment to patient-centric solutions.
