Michael Jordan's $10 Million Donation Transforms UNC School of Social Work
A Historic Contribution to Social Work
In an unprecedented move, NBA legend Michael Jordan has pledged a substantial $10 million to the University of North Carolina's School of Social Work. This remarkable act is dedicated to his mother, Deloris P. Jordan, recognizing her lifelong commitment to enhancing the quality of life for women, children, and families worldwide. This donation marks the most significant single contribution in the history of the School of Social Work, underscoring Jordan’s deep ties to his alma mater and the values instilled by his mother.
Expanding Horizons: The Jordan Gift
Michael Jordan’s generous gift aims to amplify the mission of the Global Social Development Innovations Center, which will now bear his mother’s name: the Deloris P. Jordan Global Social Development Innovations Center. This center plays a critical role in developing initiatives aimed at uplifting communities through innovative, evidence-based social work practices.
The contribution also facilitates the establishment of the Jordan Family Scholars Program, which will provide financial support to Master of Social Work students who face economic hardships in attaining their degrees. The inaugural cohort of 10 scholars will each receive a $12,500 scholarship, easing the financial burdens many aspiring social workers face.
