John & Elizabeth's Holiday Toy Drive Celebrates a Milestone
This year marks a special occasion as John & Elizabeth's Toy Drive commemorates its 25th anniversary, having gifted toys to over 90,000 children throughout Broward County since its inception. The drive aims to spread even more holiday cheer by reaching its goal of providing toys for 10,000 additional Title I elementary students in the area this festive season. This effort will bring the total impact of the Toy Drive to an incredible 100,000 children.
The holiday season typically represents joy, laughter, and gifts for many children. However, for countless families within the community, even providing one toy can pose a significant challenge. For 25 years, the Toy Drive has collaborated with local schools and community partners to help these children experience the spirit of the season and to let them know they are valued and cherished.
Founded in 2001 by Dr. Elizabeth King and her late husband, John Weaver, the Toy Drive began as a humble initiative right from their home. What started as a simple request for guests to bring toys to their Christmas party instead of gifts has blossomed into a significant holiday tradition in South Florida, powered by the generosity of donors, sponsors, community partners, and volunteers.
Dr. King, an educator with a wealth of experience in mental health and teaching, stresses the importance of toys in a child's development: "Toys represent more than just gifts. They play a crucial role in helping children learn, grow, and understand their worth. A special toy serves as a reminder to a child that they are seen and significant."
King continues to express gratitude towards the community, stating, "For 25 years, this community has generously opened its heart to provide for children who would otherwise go without. We invite individuals and businesses to join us once more so that even more children can experience the hope and joy we strive to deliver each holiday season."
In partnership with Suits, Stilettos and Lipstick Foundation (SSL Foundation)—which King co-founded—the Toy Drive has collaborated with the Fort Lauderdale Black Police Officers Association for the fourth consecutive year. Together, they work directly with Broward County Public Schools to distribute toys, ensuring each child receives something unique for the holidays.
To bolster this year's efforts, the 25th Anniversary Winter Wonderland Gala is set to take place on November 16, 2026, at Beach House Fort Lauderdale, a Hilton Resort. This event, underwritten by the resort, will feature a VIP reception, a delightful dinner, live music, dancing, and a lively auction—providing an enchanting evening while raising necessary funds to support the Toy Drive’s mission.
The Toy Drive's sponsors and partners include notable organizations such as the City of Fort Lauderdale, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, and Toys for Tots, among others. Honorary chairwomen of this year’s gala include respected community figureheads, such as Ina Lee from TravelHost and Julie Guy from 101.5 LITE FM radio. The festivities will also feature WPLG Local 10 reporter Saira Anwer as the celebrity emcee of the evening.
Community involvement is crucial for making this milestone year a success and facilitating holiday joy for 10,000 more children. Individuals and businesses can contribute by donating directly, purchasing toys from the Amazon Wish List, sponsoring the event, donating silent auction items, or hosting toy drives at their workplaces or events. Every contribution counts, with just $25 helping to reach another child in need.
