An Event Dedicated to Peace in Takasaki
On August 8, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM, the Pal System Gunma cooperative will host a significant event at the Takasaki Center, highlighting the importance of peace on the 80th anniversary of Japan's end in World War II. The gathering will focus on remembering the sacrifices made during the war, featuring a storytelling performance centered on a member of the Kamikaze Corps from Takasaki.
The highlight of the event will be a paper play called "The Miracle Clock," which tells the true story of Kiyoshi Ogawa, a Takasaki native who became a Kamikaze pilot and ultimately lost his life during the fierce battles in Okinawa. Ogawa's aircraft was shot down while targeting an American aircraft carrier. Remarkably, some of the personal belongings that he wore survived the crash and were returned to his family after 56 years, symbolizing a connection to the past.
The performance of "The Miracle Clock" will be narrated by the Takasaki City Bereaved Families Association, enriching the experience with historical context and personal insights. Attendees will have a chance to view the actual "miracle clock"—a poignant reminder of the wartime stories—along with a photo exhibition featuring images from the pre- and post-war period in the prefecture.
To further enhance the discussion, the event will connect online with Okinawa, featuring Yukari Yokota, the former vice chairman of the Okinawa Cooperative Association. She will share firsthand experiences about the intense ground battles that led to numerous civilian casualties and the ongoing issues surrounding U.S. military bases in the region.
A Continuation of Peace Activities
This event marks the first in a series organized by Pal System Gunma under the initiative "Thinking About Peace from Gunma — Peace Action." In this milestone year, the focus will be on fostering community desires for a world without war. The guest speakers and activities are designed to promote reflection on peace's value and to inspire future generations to carry on the commitment to harmony and understanding.
The event will also offer participants the opportunity to navigate through contemporary issues faced by Okinawa, extending the dialogue beyond history into the present day.

Continuing a Legacy of Peace Education
Pal System Gunma has actively engaged in peace-promoting initiatives since the fiscal year 2022, collaborating with various organizations to implement the "Thinking About Peace from Gunma — Peace Action" program. Last year, the organization successfully held workshops including fieldwork on the Maebashi Air Raid and narratives from atomic bomb survivors. This initiative, supported by member donations, continues with its 15th session of the Youth and Children Hiroshima Journey in 2023.
Looking forward, 2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of the war's conclusion and the International Year of Cooperatives, declared by the United Nations. Amidst the rising military and economic tensions globally, the UN recognizes the vital role cooperatives play in addressing poverty and hunger and fostering social inclusion.
As we approach this significant year, Pal System Gunma reiterates its commitment to advocate for the value of peace and a united world devoid of conflict.
