Seatrium and Karpowership Unite to Enhance Floating Power and Infrastructure in Southeast Asia
Seatrium and Karpowership Joint Initiative in Floating Power Solutions
In a significant advancement for energy infrastructure in Southeast Asia, Seatrium Limited has announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Karpowership, a global leader in floating power solutions. This strategic collaboration aims to enhance Singapore's energy resilience and develop innovative floating power and digital infrastructure solutions.
The MoU was revealed during the Singapore International Energy Week 2026, emphasizing both companies’ commitment to revolutionizing energy provision in the region. By integrating Seatrium's extensive offshore engineering expertise with Karpowership's pioneering experience in floating power, the collaboration seeks to address the increasing demands for flexible power solutions amidst recent global energy supply disruptions.
Strengthening Regional Energy Security
Given that Singapore relies heavily on imported natural gas for approximately 95% of its electricity generation, there is a pressing need to diversify energy sources and enhance the resilience of its electricity system. The partnership aims to develop rapidly deployable power solutions such as Powerships, floating data centers, and even hybrid or nuclear floating solutions that can be quickly mobilized to respond to energy demands.
Chris Ong, CEO of Seatrium, highlighted that energy resilience is critical to maintaining Singapore’s competitive edge and that the ongoing demand for power necessitates immediate and flexible solutions. By merging advanced technologies, including hydrogen-ready power generation, with their engineering capabilities, Seatrium envisions a robust framework that supports both local and regional energy needs.
Orhan Remzi Karadeniz, CEO of Karpowership, echoed these sentiments, mentioning that access to reliable power is increasingly influential in determining investments and fostering economic growth. The collaboration seeks to establish an integrated platform in Singapore, merging development, financing, engineering, and operational capabilities to deliver power exactly when and where it is needed—paving the path for sustained growth across Southeast Asia.
Meeting Growing Energy Demand
Singapore's peak electricity demand is expected to grow at an annual rate of 2.4% to 4.8%, potentially reaching 11.4 gigawatts by 2031. This escalation is propelled by the electrification of transport and the rapid expansion of energy-intensive sectors like semiconductor manufacturing. Across Southeast Asia, digital industries are experiencing similar growth, increasing the need for reliable energy sources and infrastructure.
According to the 9th ASEAN Energy Outlook, approximately 20% of the projected growth in electrical demand over the next five years is anticipated to come from data centers, underscoring the urgent requirement for reliable power to support these energy-heavy industries. In this context, floating power infrastructure stands out as a viable option to bolster energy supply security, enable rapid power generation deployment, and support critical infrastructure.
As the companies embark on this new chapter in their longstanding partnership, they aim to negotiate further steps towards establishing a joint venture that transforms their innovative ideas into concrete actions. Seatrium has already demonstrated its capabilities by providing multiple vessel conversions for Karpowership, and the continuation of this collaboration promises to enhance the deployment of LNG-to-power solutions globally.
In the evolving landscape of energy infrastructure, this partnership between Seatrium and Karpowership offers a synergistic approach that could redefine energy delivery mechanisms not only in Singapore but also throughout Southeast Asia. In the coming months, the companies will focus on finalizing formal agreements, thus solidifying their path towards a more resilient energy future.
Together, Seatrium and Karpowership are set to transform how Southeast Asia approaches energy challenges, ensuring sustainable growth and stability for future generations.
