New Food Market Launches to Combat Food Deserts in Eastern North Carolina

Goodwill Industries Launches Community Cupboard

In a bid to tackle food insecurity in Eastern North Carolina, Goodwill Industries of Eastern North Carolina, Inc. (GIENC®) has unveiled its latest initiative, the Goodwill Community Cupboard. Located at 150 South 5th Street in Aurora, this food market officially opened its doors on September 10, 2026. The store spans an impressive 7,600 square feet and is part of GIENC’s broader commitment to offering accessible and healthy food options within underserved areas.

The Community Cupboard is a vital component of GIENC’s mission to address food deserts. These are regions where access to affordable and nutritious food is limited, often leading to significant health disparities among local residents. Aurora, identified as a food desert, has residents who historically have had to travel far to obtain healthy food. The launch of this market aims to change that by providing a range of healthful options, including fresh produce, proteins, and non-perishable items at reasonable prices.

Expanding Access to Healthy Options

GIENC's Community Cupboard is not just about selling food; it embodies the organization's mission of education, employment, and life enrichment. Christopher Hash, the president and CEO of GIENC, emphasized the significance of equitable access to nutritious food as a cornerstone for community wellness. He stated, "A growing body of research confirms that equitable access to food, education, and employment opportunities serves as a vital cornerstone of community wellness. These critical resources represent the core social determinants of health that dictate quality of life and longevity."

With this new market, families can now have easy access to a variety of grocery items necessary for a healthy diet. This is particularly crucial for children, who rely on consistent access to nutritious food for development and learning. As Hash noted, the initiative assures that children are better equipped to learn, adults maintain consistent employment, and seniors can lead more independent lives.

Community Engagement and Support

The Community Cupboard will also serve as a hub for community engagement. One notable feature is a community room designed to facilitate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)-related activities. Through programs and resources available at the Community Cupboard, GIENC aims to inspire local residents and promote educational enrichment. Furthermore, GIENC already operates employment programs and a donation center in Washington, contributing to workforce development in Beaufort County.

Acknowledging Local Contributions

The venue is set within the Brantley Tillman Opportunity Center, named in honor of Brantley Tillman's extensive volunteer work with GIENC. Tillman's dedication spans over four decades, and his commitment to addressing food insecurity reflects the values of the local community of Eastern North Carolina.

In addition to this project, GIENC recently announced its partnership with TABLE, a nonprofit organization, to enhance the reach of the Chefs@Home program. This initiative provides nutritious food kits to families experiencing food insecurity, underscoring GIENC's relentless pursuit of impactful community solutions.

Looking Ahead

Goodwill Industries of Eastern North Carolina, Inc. has been a staple in the region for more than 62 years, assisting individuals and families through its various educational and employment programs. Their innovative solutions extend across 51 counties, working diligently to combat food insecurity while supporting local community initiatives. As they move forward with the Community Cupboard, GIENC aims to transform lives through opportunities, reinforcing the importance of access to healthy food as a fundamental human right.
