Upcoming Fieldwork in Palau: High School and University Students to Learn About WWII History and Peace

Join the WWII Fieldwork Project in Palau

The Japan Junior Chamber (JJC), based in Chiyoda-ku, is launching an exciting initiative this August to engage high school and university students in a meaningful exploration of World War II history. Set to take place from August 19 to 22, 2025, on Peleliu Island in the Republic of Palau, the project aims to deepen participants’ awareness of peace through firsthand experiences.

This event marks the second phase of a project commemorating 80 years since the end of World War II. It aims to provide younger generations, often unfamiliar with the realities of war, an opportunity to learn from the past while reflecting on the importance of peace for the future.

Accompanying the students will be renowned manga artist Santal Fish Eye, known for his work centered on war themes. He will document the students' experiences on Peleliu Island, and the insights gained are expected to contribute to a new “War Food” edition focusing on this unique history.

Purpose of the Fieldwork

The project is designed to be an eye-opening experience for the students, helping them understand the significance of historical events while confronting the ongoing implications of these wartime experiences today. Peleliu Island, a crucial battleground during WWII, retains numerous battle relics, offering a stark reminder of conflict. As the U.S. military continues to develop facilities on the island in response to current geopolitical dynamics, participants will be encouraged to reflect on how history shapes present and future scenarios in relation to peace and stability.

By walking through historical sites such as memorials, navy headquarters, and the remnants of war, participants will be prompted to think critically about the nature of peace and their role in fostering it. The aim is to cultivate a sense of responsibility and personal agency in nurturing peace for future generations.

Reflecting on Historical Lessons

Following the fieldwork, there will be a report meeting scheduled for September 27, 2025, at the Vision Center in Shinagawa. Participants and media representatives will gather to discuss their experiences and insights gained during their time in Palau. The aim is to reconnect the past with present discourse on peace through education.

Peleliu Island remains a critical site of historical significance, where over 10,000 Japanese soldiers lost their lives. The remnants of war—such as bunkers, ammunition depots, and the remains of aircrafts—will facilitate reflection on the tragic consequences of conflict while inspiring action towards peace and healing.

Creating Meaningful Connections

Throughout the fieldwork, participants will also engage in nightly sessions to discuss their emotions and thoughts. This dialogue will foster a deeper understanding of their diverse perspectives, enhancing their learning experience. Upon returning to Japan, they will share their messages through social media and video presentations, making a conscious effort to address peace as a personal commitment.

A visit to the President of Palau is part of the itinerary, emphasizing the importance of international relations and cultural understanding in peacebuilding. Engaging with local youth through cultural festivals will further facilitate relationship-building across borders.

JJC believes that this program will not only deepen students' understanding of the historical context of the war but also empower them to be active contributors to peace. By preparing participants beforehand with essential knowledge about the history and current socio-political landscape of Palau, this initiative ensures that participants approach the fieldwork with a meaningful purpose.

This hands-on approach transforms historical education into a lived experience, paving the way for participants to emerge as informed advocates of peace, equipped with the tools and insights necessary for future endeavors.
