MetLife's Commitment to Children's Emotional Well-being
MetLife Insurance Company, under the leadership of Dirk Osteen, the President and CEO, continues to demonstrate its commitment to social responsibility by sponsoring the "1 Million Classical Live" initiative. This program aims to deliver musical experiences to children across Japan, targeting facilities like children's cafeterias, learning support centers, and child welfare institutions.
Starting in August 2025 and running through December, this project will expose children to a series of mini-concerts performed by professional musicians at 30 different locations. The core objective is to nurture children's mental health and enrich their lives through the transformative power of music.
The Changing Landscape for Japanese Children
The environment surrounding children in Japan is undergoing significant changes, largely due to a decrease in birth rates. While there's a growing societal commitment to nurturing each child, issues regarding children's mental health and emotional development are surfacing. In addressing these challenges, the role of "cultural and artistic experiences" has become increasingly crucial.
Research conducted by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) highlights that exposure to arts and culture fosters children's sensitivity and enhances their empathy and creativity. This engagement also correlates with increased motivation to learn and higher levels of happiness among children. Particularly, live performances of classical music provide unique experiences that can profoundly impact children's emotional development.
Bridging the Gap in Artistic Experiences
However, the availability of cultural and artistic experiences for children greatly varies depending on their home environment and community, as identified in OECD studies. To address this disparity, MetLife has committed to supporting this initiative for four consecutive years, beginning in 2022.
One of MetLife’s sustainability objectives is to contribute to creating vibrant local communities. By delivering high-quality performances to children across the country, MetLife aims to support emotional growth and walk alongside children toward a brighter future.
This initiative is a part of MetLife's broader sustainability policy, which emphasizes the importance of building a reliable future together with clients, employees, shareholders, and the community. The company aims to create and continually provide new value even in an uncertain environment through the establishment of essential sustainability goals.
