Exciting Shochu and Awamori Event Coming to Tokyo in 2026
Mark your calendars! On February 14th and 15th, 2026, Tokyo's Nakameguro will host the third annual
'Hot Shochu Mixing Event 2026.' Organised by the Hot Shochu Mixing Event Committee and operated by KURAKARA, this year’s event promises to be larger than ever. Following last year's success, which saw participation from 25 distilleries and over 1,100 attendees, more than 30 distilleries from Kyushu and Okinawa—some including remote islands—are set to join in, providing attendees with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to sample hot, delicious 'oyuwari' shochu in winter.
What is the 'Hot Shochu Mixing Event'?
Shochu often suffers from outdated perceptions, such as being labeled as 'smelly' or 'for older audiences.' However, the reality is much different. Today's shochu encompasses a diverse range of flavors—some retain fragrant sweetness from grains, while others offer bright citrus or floral aromas, and even bold variations influenced by barrel aging.
The drinking options are just as varied: on-the-rocks, water, soda, or as cocktails—shochu can complement any meal or mood. Yet, this diversity can often be perplexing for newcomers, leading to responses of 'I don't know how to order this' or 'It seems complicated.'
To address this, the
Hot Shochu Mixing Event deliberately narrows its focus to two styles:
oyuwari (hot water mix) and
maewari kan (pre-warmed mix). The oyuwari style beautifully brings out the aromas and flavors of shochu, a traditional method cherished in Kyushu. While it seems overshadowed by soda mixes in popularity today, oyuwari is indeed the essence of shochu. This warming method promotes moderation, making it an excellent choice for those who are first-time drinkers of shochu.
This year's event will feature over 30 shochu and awamori distilleries—all showcasing their signature drinks in the oyuwari style. You’ll get to enjoy exceptional aromas and warmth that can only be experienced outdoors in winter. Each cup represents a conversation; sharing this moment with the distillers or staff will deepen your appreciation for the beverage itself.
Imagine spending a cold winter day casually visiting the venue, savoring warm oyuwari paired with delicious food, surrounded by friends and family. No special knowledge or preparation is required—just show up and experience shochu! You never know what new flavors you might discover. This is the charm of the event.

Organizer’s Comments
In an era where shochu's drinking styles are diversifying, we believe that the best way to showcase its essence is through oyuwari. This event is not merely a gathering for fans but a challenge to broaden the appeal of shochu and awamori as naturally accepted beverages. We hope to offer many more the chance to explore the experience of enjoying oyuwari in an urban winter setting.
