NIIMBL Announces the 2026 eXperience for Students

The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) is thrilled to announce the opening of student applications for its 2026 eXperience program. This engaging initiative is tailored for first- and second-year college students eager to explore career paths within the biopharmaceutical sector. The program aims to enlighten young minds about the vast opportunities in this innovative industry through a weeklong experience filled with hands-on activities, facility tours, and interactions with seasoned industry professionals.

Five Locations to Choose From

This year's eXperience will take place at five prominent sites across the United States, allowing students to select a location that best suits their proximity. The participating institutions are:
  • - Puerto Rico Science, Technology, and Research Trust: May 31 – June 6
  • - Santa Clara University, California: June 21 – 27
  • - University of Houston, Texas: June 7 – 13
  • - The Wistar Institute, Pennsylvania: June 21 – 27
  • - Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts: May 31 – June 6

Each program is fully funded, ensuring students can partake without the financial burden, thus making this opportunity accessible to all eligible candidates.

Career Development and Industry Networking

The NIIMBL eXperience facilitates much more than academic knowledge; it provides invaluable networking chances where students can meet and engage with industry leaders and peers. This interaction can significantly enhance their career prospects by connecting them with potential future employers. The program not only alerts students to the various roles available in the biopharmaceutical sector but also emphasizes the importance of innovation and development in manufacturing fields.

Since its inception in 2019, NIIMBL has reached hundreds of students from nearly 150 academic institutions across the nation. Notably, many past participants have successfully secured internships with leading biomanufacturers like Pfizer, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, and MilliporeSigma, highlighting the program's effectiveness in helping students transition from education to employment.

John Balchunas, the NIIMBL Workforce Director, reflects on the program's impact, stating, "The NIIMBL eXperience has been a fantastic opportunity for students to understand the career possibilities the biopharma industry can provide and for the industry to find up-and-coming talent." This statement underscores the mutual benefits presented by the program — students gain insight and experience, while companies can scout promising young professionals eager to contribute to their fields.

Application Process and Eligibility

To apply for the 2026 NIIMBL eXperience, candidates must be U.S. citizens residing in the U.S. and currently enrolled in a degree program with fewer than 60 credits. Students are strongly encouraged to apply to the program located near their residence to facilitate participation.

Academic organizations are also urged to share this opportunity with their students, ensuring that talented individuals have access to this enriching experience. A former participant of the NIIMBL eXperience shared, "For me, the most important benefit was gaining real-life experience and hands-on exposure with professionals. This helped me better understand potential career paths and allowed me to connect with others who share my interests."

In May 2025, NIIMBL solicited applications from its member organizations to host the eXperience in their regions, leading to selected locations receiving funding to bring this initiative to life.
