Experience Fukuoka's Seafood at the 2026 Tokyo Edition
The much-anticipated
2026 Tokyo Edition of the Fukuoka Fish Fair will kick off on
February 10 and run until
March 10. This annual event aims to bring the rich flavors of Fukuoka’s seafood to the vibrant dining scene in the greater Tokyo area. Featuring exclusive menu items created by talented chefs from Tokyo, the fair highlights the best fish caught in the clear waters surrounding Fukuoka Prefecture.
A Celebration of Fukuoka's Seafood
The fair is designed to share the delectable seafood from Fukuoka, which is blessed with conducive fishing conditions. Known for its
rich fishing grounds, the prefecture is home to varieties like
anago (conger eel),
fugu (pufferfish),
kue (grouper), and
akamoku (seaweed), each crafted into delightful dishes by local chefs during the fair.
The participating restaurants will serve creative and authentic menus featuring local specialties. Here are just a few examples of the sumptuous dishes on offer:
- - Anago Donabe Rice: A hearty rice dish featuring the savory goodness of anago paired with tender bamboo shoots, perfect for rice lovers.
- - Otonon Natural Fugu Yuzu Tataki: A delicate preparation where fugu is served in a refreshing citrus sauce that enhances its taste.
- - Ama-san Akamoku Shirasu Rice Bowl: A healthy option combining akamoku seaweed and shirasu (whitebait) for a nutritional treat.
- - Tiger Pufferfish Dining Experience: Dine on exquisite tiger fugu, a standout dish known for its luxurious taste, presented in a traditional tataki style.
The Concept Behind the Fair
Since its inception, the fair has focused on promoting and supporting local fisheries. More than
800 restaurants and direct sales businesses in Fukuoka are certified as
“Fukuoka’s Local Fish Support Shops,” offering special menus to showcase the freshest catches. This initiative has been a staple in Fukuoka before reaching Tokyo, aiming to deepen connections between the city and the coastal delicacies from Fukuoka.
In 2026, the fair centers on Fukuoka’s exceptional seafood, inviting diners to indulge in diverse culinary offerings. Each participating restaurant presents its unique interpretation of Fukuoka’s bounty, providing a fantastic opportunity for Tokyoites to savor flavors from this distant coastal region without leaving the city.
Why Fukuoka Seafood?
Fukuoka Prefecture is situated in proximity to three renowned seas: the
Chikuzen Sea (Genkai-nada and Hibikinada),
Buzentai Sea (Suou-nada), and
Ariake Sea. Thanks to the blending of the Tsushima Current and the ebb and flow of tides, it harbors a wide variety of seafood. Seasonal specialties include
madai (sea bream),
torafugu (tiger pufferfish),
sawara (striped mackerel),
ika (squid),
anago, and
hamo (pike). These fish acquire their unique flavors and firm textures by thriving in the rough waters of Genkai-nada, making them a delicacy worth exploring year-round.
