Goya Foods Collaborates with NYC Department of Education
In April 2025, Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States, made headlines with its Goya Cares initiative, teaming up with the New York City Department of Education (DOE) to launch comprehensive educational programs aimed at combating child abuse and ensuring student well-being. Over the last three years, Goya Cares has made a significant impact, reaching over 100,000 students in 100 public schools across New York City. This year, the focus is on supporting schools identified as higher risk for bullying, thus guaranteeing that students in need of assistance receive the necessary help.
The initiative known as 'Stay Smart. Stay Safe. Protecting Our Children' showcases Goya Foods' unwavering dedication to safeguarding children. Rafael Toro, National Director of Public Relations at Goya Foods, expressed pride in advocating for initiatives that empower communities and equip children with the tools needed to navigate the complexities of their lives. By joining forces with the DOE and the Monique Burr Foundation, Goya Foods is providing essential education that empowers students to recognize and respond to potentially dangerous situations, ultimately fostering confidence in speaking up for their safety.
As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month this April, sixth-grade students at the Academy for Independent Learning and Leadership (MS 129) in the Bronx participated in a lesson centered on online safety. During this interactive session, students learned about digital dangers, cyberbullying, and the five safety rules outlined by the Monique Burr Foundation, while also identifying safe adults in their lives to approach for support.
Melissa Ramos, Chancellor of the NYC Board of Education, emphasized her commitment to student safety and underscored the importance of the collaboration with Goya Cares and the Monique Burr Foundation in working towards the shared goal of protecting the next generation of New Yorkers.
Developed by the Monique Burr Foundation, the curriculum is unique in that it addresses the complexities of bullying and personal safety through a trauma-informed lens. This educational program encourages students to discern between safe and unsafe situations and relationships, thereby empowering them to make informed choices.
Goya Cares remains committed to creating a safer and healthier world for communities globally. The program stresses the importance of active social responsibility and promotes partnerships with organizations that adopt a holistic approach to child welfare. By prioritizing preventive education, Goya Cares seeks to shield children from all forms of abuse while raising awareness about the mental health struggles faced by youth today.
