Experience Japanese Culture Through Field Trip Plus by GLI

Exciting Field Trip Plus by GLI: Unveiling Japanese Culture

On February 1, 2026, the Global Learner's Institute (GLI) will host the highly anticipated Field Trip Plus event. This experiential learning program is designed for students keen on advancing their English skills in real-world situations, venturing beyond the traditional classroom.

A Unique Learning Opportunity

The theme for this edition is "Let's Share Japanese Culture with the World!" Participants will have the chance to delve into the traditional crafts of Japan and convey their experiences in English. This program aims to empower students not only to use the English language but also to express their understanding of Japanese cultural treasures.

Gaining Insight Through Edo Kiriko

During the trip, students will participate in a workshop focusing on Edo Kiriko, a traditional form of Japanese glasswork known for its intricate designs and rich history. GLI chose this craft because it exemplifies the renowned beauty of Japanese artistry shaped by age-old techniques and stories. The program enables participants to engage actively, creating their unique Edo Kiriko pieces from various selections while receiving guidance from experienced artisans. For all sessions, English will be the medium of instruction, making the learning process authentic and immersive.

Capturing the Experience

Students will also develop skills in photography and video editing. They will document their creative process and finished products, choosing a selection of photos and videos to edit. The process includes adding titles and English narratives, ensuring they can articulate their journey and messages to a global audience. This step is crucial, as it reinforces the learning outcomes and allows participants to connect their experiences with English communication.

Engaging with International Visitors

An exciting feature of the event is the opportunity for students to conduct English interviews with international tourists visiting Asakusa. This will give them valuable insights into how Japan and its culture are perceived worldwide, fostering an objective understanding of their heritage. Participants will practice conveying their thoughts in English, enriching the learning experience with diverse perspectives.

Presenting What They Learn

To reinforce these insights, a final presentation will take place upon returning to the classroom. Each student will share a brief 60 to 90-second video presentation or mini-lecture about their created art piece and the knowledge gained throughout the trip. This culminating activity integrates all aspects of the trip and solidifies the students' learning experience.

Field Trip Plus: A Three-Step Process

The program is comprised of three essential phases:
1. Make (Creation): Participants will engage in an Edo Kiriko workshop at a local studio, creating their unique glassware under professional supervision.
2. Edit: Students will capture the workshop moments and polish their edited videos/photos, introducing basic editing skills in the process.
3. Share: Presentations of their outputs will help cultivate their abilities to convey, summarize, and communicate effectively.

Maximizing Learning with Pre-Trip Preparation

GLI emphasizes the importance of pre-trip education. Prior to the trip, on January 31, participants will attend a preparatory session at the GLI Hiroo Second Classroom. This session builds foundational knowledge, ensuring that students feel confident during the interview and presentation phases.
