Enhancing Student Exchange through ASEAN University Network Visit to Okayama University

Strengthening International Cooperation with ASEAN University Network



On January 9, 2026, a significant delegation from the ASEAN University Network (AUN) paid a visit to Okayama University. Led by Secretary-General Thanapan Laiprakobsup, the delegation aimed to strengthen ties and explore opportunities for expanding student exchanges between member universities.

During the meeting, President Tohru Nasu engaged in an informative dialogue with the delegation, which provided insights into the ongoing student exchange initiatives between AUN and Okayama University. Both parties expressed their shared desire to foster more vibrant and active student interactions in the future.

The visit also included discussions about the upcoming AUN and National Six Universities Cooperative Summer Program (SixERS 3D Program), which aims to enhance educational experiences through collaborative frameworks. Associate Professor Takeo Inamori participated in these discussions, emphasizing the integration of global educational efforts.

Moreover, the delegation exchanged ideas related to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's initiative to establish overseas network functionalities for promoting study abroad in Japan. This conversation included Vice President Takayoshi Suzuki and Professor Yuichi Oda, who focused on the current state and challenges of encouraging students from the ASEAN region to study in Japan.

Since the establishment of a partnership agreement in 2013, Okayama University and AUN have maintained a dynamic relationship, particularly through various summer programs that facilitate student exchanges. These initiatives are expected to further enhance academic and research collaborations across member institutions.

For the future, the commitment from Okayama University to serve as a regional core and distinctive research institution is pronounced, anticipating increased efforts towards student recruitment from the ASEAN region.

About the ASEAN University Network (AUN)


Founded in 1995 following a proposal during the 4th ASEAN Summit in 1992, the ASEAN University Network comprises 30 member universities from 10 ASEAN countries. It aims to enhance collaboration and promote academic exchanges among member institutions, thus enriching educational landscapes across the region.

National Six Universities International Cooperation Organization


This organization, which operates through the National Six Universities Consortium, facilitates international activities among its member universities. Vice President Takayoshi Suzuki leads this initiative, aiming to promote collaborative engagements that enhance educational and cultural exchanges.

Promoting Study Abroad Programs in Japan


Beginning in the 2024 academic year, Okayama University will spearhead an initiative funded by the Ministry of Education to double the number of international students from the ASEAN region. This ambitious project will involve establishing offices in major cities such as Yangon, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Vientiane, Jakarta, and Kuala Lumpur, enabling effective outreach and networking to attract talented students.
