Creating Child-Centric Neighborhoods: Lessons from the UK 'Playing Out' Movement

In recent years, the UK has witnessed a fascinating movement known as 'Playing Out,' which transforms neighborhoods by placing children at their center. This initiative has given rise to small pedestrian zones that encourage interaction among neighbors, allowing children to play safely near their homes. By fostering visible intergenerational connections, this model addresses various challenges faced by community development and parenting.

The Origin of 'Playing Out'

The 'Playing Out' movement was conceived by mothers dedicated to improving their children's play experiences. They took the initiative to create vehicle-free streets, or 'play streets,' where children could freely engage in play. This grassroots project evolved into a nationally recognized movement, with over 100 local councils across the UK supporting frameworks for 'Playing Out.' Today, this initiative has expanded significantly, affecting more than 1,500 locations nationwide.

In 2016, the initiative found a voice in Japan through the 'Tokyo Neighborhood Street Play Project,' which encourages citizens to temporarily convert streets into play and interaction spaces. With the core group's goal of connecting communities and creating safe play environments for children, this project has gained traction in Japan.

The Upcoming Event with Ingrid Skills

In recognition of this international movement, we are excited to host Ingrid Skills, co-founder of 'Playing Out,' who will share insights into the UK’s placemaking practices focused on children. This event provides a unique opportunity to learn from an expert whose organization has shaped how communities approach child-friendly designs. Through simultaneous interpretation, attendees will be able to engage with Ingrid's ideas and learn how they might apply in their own contexts.

Expert Panel Discussion

Alongside Ingrid Skills, the event will feature distinguished speakers such as Dr. Arisa Yamaguchi, a pediatrician specializing in child well-being, and Ai Iiishi, editor-in-chief and senior manager at Public R Real Estate, who has proposed innovative uses for public spaces. The discussion aims to intersect community engagement, child well-being, and unique approaches to public space utilization, reflecting the multifaceted nature of these issues. Don't miss the chance to join leading voices in this critical conversation about childhood and community development.
