Cambrex Initiates $120 Million Expansion in Charles City, Iowa

Cambrex, a prominent global player in contract development and manufacturing, recently celebrated a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of a $120 million expansion at its facility in Charles City, Iowa. This expansion is set to enhance the site’s production capabilities by adding 160,000 liters of manufacturing capacity, increasing the total capacity by approximately 25% to nearly one million liters.

The expansion project, slated for completion by the fourth quarter of 2028, is seen as a crucial step in bolstering Cambrex’s position in the ever-evolving pharmaceutical landscape. By focusing on small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and synthetic peptides, this initiative aims to support both development and commercial manufacturing processes. Cambrex’s facilities, notably the Charles City site, have played an integral role in delivering quality pharmaceutical development services for nearly a century.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 29, bringing together prominent figures from the company, local community, and state government, including Senator Chuck Grassley and Iowa's Lieutenant Governor Chris Cournoyer. The event not only commemorated the initiation of this expansive project but also highlighted the facility's 100th anniversary, marking a century of operation within the community.

Claudio Russolo, the Chief Operating Officer and incoming CEO of Cambrex, expressed the importance of this expansion saying, _“This groundbreaking marks an important milestone in our continued investment in U.S. manufacturing and in the Charles City site. As we celebrate 100 years, this expansion reflects our commitment to the future.”_

The Charles City facility is well-recognized for its expertise in providing comprehensive development and manufacturing services for small molecule APIs, synthetic peptides, and pharmaceutical intermediates, facilitating projects from clinical development through to large-scale commercial production. The new investment aims to enhance the existing infrastructure, effectively meeting the growing customer demand for high-quality pharmaceutical products.
