Cambrex Commences $120 Million Expansion Project in Charles City, Iowa

On October 29, 2026, Cambrex, a prominent global contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), officially broke ground on a transformative $120 million expansion project at its facility in Charles City, Iowa. This project is not just a significant financial investment; it symbolizes Cambrex’s long-term commitment to bolstering U.S. manufacturing capabilities. The expanded facility will accommodate an additional 160,000 liters of manufacturing capacity, bringing the site's total to nearly one million liters and enhancing production capabilities for small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and synthetic peptides by approximately 25%.

The groundbreaking ceremony was a notable event attended by key stakeholders including company executives, local and state officials, and community members. Among those present were Claudio Russolo, the Chief Operating Officer and incoming CEO of Cambrex; Joe Nettleton, the Vice President of Operations and Site Leader; and Timothy Fox, CEO of the Charles City Area Development Corporation. Esteemed guests such as Senator Chuck Grassley and Lieutenant Governor Chris Cournoyer of Iowa graced the event, emphasizing the importance of this milestone.

The timing of this expansion aligns poignantly with the 100th anniversary of the Charles City facility, marking a century of service in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Claudio Russolo remarked, "This groundbreaking marks an important milestone in our continued investment in U.S. manufacturing and in the Charles City site. As the site celebrates its 100th anniversary, this expansion reflects both its long history and its continued importance to our future." He emphasized that the new capacity will play a crucial role in supporting customers as they advance their programs from development phases through to commercialization.

The Charles City facility is integral to Cambrex’s operations, supplying development and manufacturing services for small molecule APIs, synthetic peptides, and pharmaceutical intermediates. The upcoming enhancements not only build upon the existing infrastructure and expertise at the site, but also aim to meet the increasing demand from customers in the pharmaceutical sector. The project is projected to reach completion in the fourth quarter of 2028, further fortifying Cambrex's capabilities in drug substance development and manufacturing across the entire lifecycle of pharmaceuticals.

With more than 45 years of experience and a workforce of around 2,000 experts, Cambrex is recognized for offering specialized drug substance technologies and services. Their areas of expertise include continuous flow processing, controlled substances, peptide synthesis, solid-state science, biocatalysis, and the handling of highly potent APIs. This expansion is expected to enhance these offerings significantly, further serving Cambrex's global clientele from North America and Europe.

As the pharmaceutical landscape continues to evolve, Cambrex’s strategic investment in the Charles City facility positions the company to remain at the forefront of drug development and manufacturing. Investors and stakeholders will be watching closely as the project unfolds, reflecting not only on Cambrex's growth but also on the broader implications for U.S. manufacturing in the biotechnology field.

In a time of increasing demand for advanced therapeutics and personalized medicine, Cambrex’s expansion reinforces its pivotal role in the pharmaceutical supply chain and highlights the importance of domestic manufacturing capabilities in meeting global healthcare needs.
