Botanee Group's Innovative Approach to Mountain Bioeconomy at COP17
Botanee's Commitment to Sustainable Bioeconomy
At the recent COP17 conference in Yerevan, Armenia, Botanee Group, a renowned Chinese cosmetics company, showcased its innovative approach to creating a sustainable mountain bioeconomy. Founded in Yunnan, China, Botanee has developed a unique framework known as the "research-conservation-industrialization" model, which has been pivotal in merging ecological conservation with economic growth.
During the conference, Botanee participated as a co-organizer of a key event focused on mountain bioeconomy, where the Yerevan Declaration on Inclusive Mountain Bioeconomy was launched. This declaration emphasizes the importance of conserving biodiversity and ensuring fair benefit-sharing while creating sustainable opportunities for future generations. It calls for a blend of traditional knowledge, scientific research, and responsible innovation to strengthen ecological conservation efforts and improve livelihoods, particularly for indigenous peoples and local communities.
In her keynote speech, Botanee's director of public communications, Zhong Wei, elaborated on the company's sustainability philosophy. She articulated how Botanee believes that protecting biodiversity equates to safeguarding the very foundation of their enterprise. This understanding has led Botanee to establish a comprehensive three-in-one sustainability ecosystem that focuses on research, conservation, and industrialization.
Research and Discovery
Botanee's dedication to research has spanned over a decade, encompassing partnerships with various universities and research institutions. Thanks to this collaboration, they have meticulously screened over 2,000 plant species, identifying 266 that possess powerful skincare properties. This effort translates the traditional usage of Yunnan's native plants into a standardized, traceable industrial application, reinforcing both cultural heritage and economic viability.
Conservation Efforts
On the conservation front, Botanee has established a significant research and cultivation base at Haba Snow Mountain in Shangri-La. Here, the company has undertaken ambitious projects for the artificial propagation and wild reintroduction of more than 20 rare plateau species. This initiative supports biodiversity while fostering ecological balance in the region, showcasing Botanee's commitment to environmental stewardship beyond profit-making.
Industrial Integration
Botanee's approach to industrialization follows an innovative model termed "enterprise + base + farming household." This strategy enables local farmers and herders in northwest Yunnan to gain stable incomes by participating in the value chain of botanical skincare products. In 2024 alone, the plant-based industrial chain generated over 10 billion yuan in added output value, with more than half of the raw materials sourced locally. This model has not only been recognized but has also been integrated into the Global Mountain Bioeconomy Framework, establishing it as a reference for sustainable mountain development.
The Way Forward
Looking ahead, Botanee aims to further implement the mountain bioeconomy principles outlined in the Yerevan Declaration across various mountainous regions globally. The company plans to refine its "research-conservation-industrialization" model, contributing significantly to global biodiversity governance. Botanee's endeavor illustrates a proactive approach toward harmonizing economic activity with ecological preservation, setting a compelling example of sustainability in the cosmetics industry.
In the face of global environmental challenges, Botanee Group showcases how businesses can lead in creating sustainable solutions that honor both nature and local communities, ensuring a better tomorrow for generations to come.
